Any good gun app? (i.e. maintenance)

Dear friends

Even though I'm still deciding what is going to be my first gun, it occurred to me that logging the number of times it was fired would be helpful to remind me when I should clean it.

I also foresee that as the collection grows (seems inevitable...), it may become troublesome to keep a record of use of each gun.

That leads me to ask: Is there any app for that?

I'm relatively new, but shouldn't you clean your gun once you are back from your hunting/range trip, before you put it away?

That way, you're not putting it away dirty, and it will have a fresh coat of lubricant/preservative to keep it from oxidation/corrosion, so even if it's in there a minute you won't have to worry about it next time.

I try my hardest not to clean after every range trip but I always end up doing it.
For round count etc. I keep a little notepad in my range bag. It is a good idea to keep track of that for springs etc.

Just look at it, and make a decision. Besides, I'd pop the cherry on starting your collection first. That's your priority.

buy a notebook and pen at dollar tree store if you're not a neat freak like me. bring with you to the range ---> record how many round shot.

this will let you know when to clean the gun and when to change recoil spring , etc.

Excel or Google Docs spreadsheet. You can set different columns/rows for dates, different firearms, round count, and whatever you want to track.

I keep a spreadsheet of all my guns. I include pictures, a list of any upgrades or modifications (insurance purpose) and round count with the date, location, and ammo used. I also notate any abnormalities I had, if any, with the firearm.

Just use any reminder app. You set up half to a full day just for cleaning and oiling them depends on how many you will have.

This is for iOS. There are two versions of the app.

I make notes while at the range for target distance(s), ammo type, grain weight, and round count. I also note any bad cases, FTF, FTE, etc.

Once I get home, I transfer the data to an Excel spreadsheet.

On the spread sheet I make a note of anything unusual; like the lightning that chased me off the range this morning, etc.

I usually clean my guns the day of, or the day after a shoot.

I clean my guns every round I shot. In this case I am sure I am not missing anything.

In days of old, primers used potassium chlorate as an explosive agent. This of course meant that salts were created and said salts, if left in a gun's barrel, caused rust and pitting.

Chlorate primers were used by the world's military well after WWII. In fact, it's not uncommon to find corrosive military surplus ammo still for sale. Of course, the use of these types of primers lead to the military's adoption of a clean immediately after using protocol. That's how my father learned, and he passed that onto my brothers and me. So, I tend to clean guns immediately after firing. Hey, it can't hurt, right?

As for round counts, I don't do it. I used to shoot competitively, and cleaned when the gun started shooting inaccurately. I changed barrels when they stop shooting competitively, irrespective of the number of rounds.

While I see some value in counting rounds to perform spring changes, its really not rocket science. Change then every year unless you are shooting the crap out of the gun. In that case change it every four to six months.

Most importantly, don't overthink it.
