5/16 caliber translates to 8mm, 8mm Lebel comes to mind, but I am not sure of the Lebel round's length.

Sure looks like it, and plenty of 54r surplus has no obvious markings.
Dred, does the headstamp resemble any of these? Any leftover paint around the tip?

There is no headstamp, and no leftover paint...some of the stamps in the link look pretty subtle, but I'd be surprised if I missed them...

Its 7.62x54r. Its not flaring out enough to be 8mm lebel.Everyone on Calguns keeps talking about TDS. I never knew we had so many fish keepers!
