I received an ad a couple of days ago and decided to test out the new process, hopefully getting some ammo at good prices (CCI 9mm for $8.97/50rd and Herter .22 for $18/500rd.) I have an old-school DL that has not expired, but to be safe, I took along my passport.
So I arrived at 8:45, 15 minutes before store opening, to beat the crowd. There were a couple of guys also waiting. As soon as the door opened, I rushed to the hunting section, grabbed a ticket, and waited for the guy at the counter (GATC) to help me.
GATC: Do you know about the new process?
Me: Yes.
GATC: Have you bought a gun in the last 7 years?
Me: Yes.
GATC: Is the address on your DL current?
Me: Yes.
GATC: Have you moved?
Me: No.
GATC: What do you want to buy?
Me: X rounds of 9mm and Y rounds of .22LR in the ad.
GATC: Let me check the inventory.
5 minutes later, GATC said there's enough inventory to meet my demand, and proceeded to take $1 from me and ran my DL through a card reader; the passport was not required. (Edit: GATC also asked for phone number, citizenship, race, and country of birth.) 15 seconds later, I was cleared to purchase ammo. GATC printed out two forms (one for each caliber) that looked like firearm DROSs, and asked me to sign them. So far so good.
Then GATC went into the stock room and got cases of 9mm totaling X rounds. GATC tried to get Y rounds of the advertised .22LR from the glass shelves, but oops, there were only 0.6Y available. I asked if that'd be a problem since it says Y in the printed forms. He said, nah, they just wanted a general idea of who has what ammo, exact count not really mattering much.
Poor guy had to press the scanner button (X / 50) times for the 9mm ammo, as apparently Bass Pro's checkout system doesn't allow him to enter a multiplier, and the bar codes on the big cases aren't in their system.
In the end, I got out of the store at 9:30, which isn't too bad. It could've been faster if Bass Pro's inventory and checkout processes were more efficient. Imagine the pain someone has to go through to buy just a few boxes of ammo; the overhead is just not worthwhile. Also the gun/ammo/hunting section is severely understaffed. The next guy had to wait 30 minutes just to get started.
Well, all is proceeding as the California legislature has intended. But at least I got most of what I wanted today

I'm keeping the receipt just in case.
