One of those days at the range.

I decided to go out to the ranch and shoot some today.

Last night I found a (500 count) box of .22 caliber 69 grain Sierra MatchKings so I decided I need to work up a 600 yard match load for the 22.250 AI and I'm still developing a load for the 7x57 and I hadn't shot an AR 15 in a year or so ( I hate the fin grips)

Got all set up and put my 5 gallon pail with the padded seat down and the seat cracks in half (It's plastic and about 30 years old). So I had to put the rear wheels of the truck in a rut (I shoot off the tail gate) and turn the bucket over and sit on that. I set up the chronograph 10 feet down range and the 22.250 and the 7x57 were barely clearing the sky screens down range.

I shot both bolt guns for awhile and then a freak wind burst came through lifting up my EZ Up and slamming into the bed of my 6 month old truck leaving a nice scrape over the rear wheel.

I got the EZ Up tied down and broke out the AR-15. Since the scope mounts are so much higher on the AR I had to lower the front rest down to get my eye centered. Did I mention that the bolt guns were just barely clearing the chronograph's skyscreens?

For the first time in 34 years, I put a bullet through the plastic housing of the front sky screen.

On the good side I did find a load for the 22.250 with the 69 g SMK's that will reach out to 1,000 yards. And the 7x757 is starting to shoot the 150 g Partitions better with the higher velocities.

Rookie (at blasting chronos). I've blown apart at least 2 (maybe 3) Chrony's.

How is that? Did you get a special fast twist barrel for the .22-250? They're usually like 1 in 14 aren't they?

Yes, I had a custom, three groove, 1"10" twist barrel made for it.

^^^^^^^^ good excuse now to get one.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Sweet! What kind of velocity were you at where you saw accuracy in the 22-250AI with the SMK?
Its an expensive hobby, but more expensive when you try and convince yourself you don't need what you really want.

I'm running the 69 grain SMK at 3320 fps

I waited to replace my old chronograph for two years waiting for the Labradar to come out and even then the first generation wouldn't track 22 caliber bullets. I'll probably get one soon.

The Labradar is the one where the risk of damaging the unit is the lowest in my experience. Magneto Speed is good but can be a bit of a hassle if your testing different guns and using it for handguns requires the handgun to have a rail (Can't use my 1911 for example).

Grated for the Labradar you have to change the bullet weight and velocity range but it's still easier than transferring the magneto speed from one gun to another or using a regular chronograph at ranges where you have to wait for cease fires.

I'm old school and used to chronos but the Labradar is tempting. The one good thing about chronos is that there are no adjustments necessary, I can shoot 45.70 at 1,200 fps then the 22.250 AI at 4,500 fps and it just tracks everything. At a public range they can be a pain but 99% shooting is on private ranges where I'm shooting by myself.
