1911 won't feed HP

Since no clinic is complete without a basic troubleshooting guide... One of the things that I'm known for is my insistence that most functional issues with the 1911 are simple in origin, and usually simple to fix. I've drawn some flak over this from a couple of pistolsmiths, and the only...
I've outlined a few common problems along with the steps that need to be taken to identify exactly what's causing the malfunction. Too many inexperienced guys have attacked the barrel throat with a file or a Dremel, when the trouble was the extractor. By the time they realized their mistake, a barrel was ruined. The bottom line is that it's 10% knowing where to look and 90% common sense and patience.Comment

Some feeding issues with short HP's and target wadcutters are remedied by tuning the magazine lips. The short nose requires an earlier release from the magazine as the slide is closing.Comment

Where do the rounds hang up?Comment

STI is a high end gun and it might like specific ammo, so it might be the reloading territory.
As an example, my fully custom hand built SVI will not always feed reliably off the shelf target fodder. The recipe I have from the manufacturer is for OAL of 1.200, not the 1.135 which is the SAAMI specification. Such long rounds won't even chamber in standard .40 guns.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

I’d start with the rounds themselves. The rounds could have come from the factory in working conditions, but thru handling set back could have occurred. The primers could also be not flush. If you set the bullets on a table standing up, do they wobble?
If you have a reloading buddy, use their case gauge to check the ammo.
All my self defense rounds are first checked before they’re even loaded. In my opinion, every self defense round should be checked before being loaded.Comment

I've had two different 1911s that didn't like any of the Hornady Critical D or Custom ammo. Everything else would feed fine. The explanation I got was the Hornady stuff is manufactured on the large end of acceptable standards. When you combine that with a tight fitting chamber it causes problems. I never got the calipers out to verify if that is true or not.
Try doing a plunk test to see how the Hornady stuff fits. On both of my guns they would hang up.Last edited by Barbarosa; 07-01-2019, 9:42 PM.Comment

Great article. I have a 1911 that feeds ranger all day long but not hydra shok
So I shoot ranger T series.Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
