    Gun Safe Max Load Question

I've got one of those Costco Bighorn safes (model 19ECB).

From what I've seen on the net, most of these low cost safes do not have an internal frame, and the outside sheet metal is what makes up the structure.
I want to store items on top of the safe. If I place some 2x4s on top of the safe near the edges to help concentrate the weight to the walls, will this safe be ok to hold about 400 pounds on top?

You'd be surprised how much weight your safe can support....

I would secure it for earthquake safety. San Jose has had it's share.

              +100 on this.

Not all earthquakes are side shakers as most folks experience. If epicenter is your area it will shake and bounce.

                Thanks for all the replies.

                Forgot about the earthquakes.
I'm gonna rig up an exoskeleton made of 2x4s around the safe to help keep the stuff sitting on top, from falling over during an earthquake.

Confirming you bolted the safe to the floor.

Bolted down a day before it went on duty.

Question: Why do you consider the bighorn low cost safe? I paid $799 for mine, after a $200 rebate. $1,000 isn't a low costs safe?

I would consider some stack-ons low costs.

Or do you mean quality? I would consider them high quality?

                        Thanks,

I personally would not consider it low cost, definitely not low cost to me. Quality is good too. However, the consensus on calguns says that if your gun safe does not weigh over 2000 lbs, it's cheap.
The Bighorn is good enough for me. It can be defeated for sure, but for the typical smash and grab thieves, it will do. I've also got a security system that will contact me and the police, so the idea is that me or the police can get there before the safe can be defeated.

If you live near Alum Rock Park, it rocks and rolls on a regular bases.
It did while growing up there.
