    storage locations - noob content

i'm sure this has come up but i'm wading thru the search results and i'm getting ADD looking for the appropriate answers.

as i shop for a safe, i'm also considering the best location to put it and would like some basic info because location will dictate size

    - what are the legalities of where you store? does it have to be the address on your ID? ie, home? or can you store at a non residential building or business? room would be locked with restricted access of course.
    - i'm sure there's a law about proximity to schools, but there's got to be an exception if you live next to one..... right?
    - what about a courthouse?
    - just so i'm clear, you canNOT store ammo in the same safe?

EKK you can store ammo in your safe along with firearms. Now ready yourself for the onslaught of replies.

you can store ammo in the safe but not a good idea to store large amounts. It is called a gun/firearms safe for a reason.
If your home is next to a courthouse or school you can still have firearms stored there. The probably should be in a case when moving them out of the house so not to cause problems.
Do not have to be at the place on your ID.

One word of advise. Buy a safe much too large for the firearms you have. It will get filled----trust me. You probably will buy more firearms. You will want to put other things in it such as cameras, jewelry, cash, important papers, passports, extra credit cards, birth certs, collector knives, mags, other electronics when you are away from home and such. I bought one that was 3X what I needed. Now I have 3 of them and they are full. Also a bigger one is harder to move both for you and for thieves!
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

You can even store ammo in your gun in a safe. Mind blow I know.

Im not sure what led you to believe that you cant store ammo in a safe - you absolutely can. The only time I wouldnt is when that space occupied by the ammo could be better utilized by securing a higher value item in said space.

Some people think it is hazardous to store "large" amounts of ammo in case of a house fire but here is a video debunking the often exaggerated dangers. Its a pretty long video but the take away is projectiles ignited outside of a firearm are not that powerful. It wont stop firefighters from entering the blaze and fighting the fire.

it wasn't necessarily in a safe, but that it was with the guns themselves.
i'll see people randomly post that you 'have to' keep ammo separate from the firearm. but i don't know if that's supposed to be a legal thing or a child safety thing. i know people store their home defense guns loaded so it never made sense to me. but then, only about half the laws do anyway.

                    I went the other way.

One for guns and two for lots and lots of ammo.

PS: Gun safe also has ammo stored in it.

it occurs to me that lgs asks me if i have a gun safe at home whenever i dros. if i answer yes, then they ask for make/model. is there a list of 'approved' safes to avoid having to buy a new cable lock with each used gun?

The California DoJ has a list of approved security containers on its website.

When you pick a safe. Make sure it Jas the UL sticker . Usually on the door.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

And gun safes that are UL-listed Residential Security Containers (RSC) or higher in the TL range need not be listed by name on the State's list.

Be aware that Federal law also applies, and BATFE intransigence/incompetence will not allow you to use the CA Safe Affidavit for handguns; it's fine for long guns.
