After being firearm-less out here in Hawaii since all my guns were stolen while I was away back in 2000-2003, I just picked up a couple of .22s to start getting in some range time. Gun #1 is a brand new CZ 457 American, and once my scope gets here I will be good to go on that one. It's Gun #2 that I am writing about. It is a Norinco TU/KKW Mauser K98k copy (JW 25A) based on a CZ 452 action. The metal is good, the bore is really clean, and mechanically the weapon is in pretty good shape.
It is the wood that I am concerned about. The original finish wasn't that great to begin with and it is showing a fair number of scratches and there were some dents that I had to (successfully) steam out. Now, to set it all off I would like to refinish the stock and forearm wood. The problem is removing the two bands around the barrel and forearm at the muzzle end of the rifle. There are no springs to depress like a real Mauser would have. Does anybody here know how this is accomplished? Should I be on a different board? Can anyone point me in the right direction? All help will be much appreciated.
