Transporting firearm using a pick up truck

I need your expertise fellow cal gunners. What’s the legal way of transporting a handgun and long guns on a pick-up truck. Can you bolt a tool box at the bed of the truck and use it as a closed container? Can you literally just put a long firearm on the bed of your pick up truck on a gun container of course lock and be consider legal? What about handgun what’s the legal way of transporting it? Thanks in advance. FYI I’m in California

You can have your guns in the cab, keep your ammo in the bed

Pistols locked in a bag or container, long guns in cases, ammo in whatever. All of it in the cab. The Bed of a truck is not secure, even while under way.

just like Carpenter said, I do the same and it's legal.

Here's all the info you need to know

HANDGUNS Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

This guy got it right. I have a pickup and it's how I do it. Never, ever in the bed of the truck. Never.

I keep it all in my cab in the back seat and floor. Firearms have their own locked cases and my ammo goes in my range bag

Well holy crap, I read the wording all wrong. I had been thinking it meant I can't have my ammo and rifle in the same place, aka....cab of my truck.

My bag and case of ammo both have locks I use though, guess I'll just put the rifle case on my backseat from now on then!

                Stupid me

Before pickups had 4 doors, I always just had the guns behind the seat and the ammo on the floor in front. When I bought my Blazer, I put the guns in the back and the ammo remained on the floor in the front. With my new truck, the ammo still rides on the floor in front, but now the guns go under the back seat. I never advertise.

If you do not have a CCW license, handguns must be unloaded and locked in a container. Metal box (gun safe), range bag, just as long as it is lockable, it cannot be the stock glove box or stock center console. I wrote "stock" because you can add a lockable gun safe to these and that would make it legal. Ammo can be in the same container, but a loaded magazine cannot be in the gun.

I have a crew cab and put the long guns in a sock or case on the floor of the back. Handguns are in their own locked containers in one shoulder bag....ammo, ear muffs, etc in a separate shoulder case.

Our sheriffs shoot where I do...and everybody basically does it the same way...even guys with regular cabs...they put stuff behind the seats.

As others have said...not in the bed...not cause it would get stolen but because the roads are dirt and bumpy...and everything might bounce out

Appreciate all the info. My question is does it really matter where you put the gun if it’s in a lock container? Front passenger side, rear passenger or on the floor at the back of the driver seat?in a lockable tool storage at the back of your truck.thanks again

I roll with a lockable tonneau cover. HGs and AWs in locked cases under it.

Officer: What's under the tonneau cover?

                          Me: Nothing illegal

What’s legal and what’s smart are two different things

A friend met me at the range will everything in the bed of his truck

To him it was no big deal, load up truck at home, drive to range, unload.

I asked him what would a CHP do if they rode past and saw 3 long gun cases in the bed? Could they stop him and go through everything?

He thought everything he had was legal and no big deal..... to me, it was a dumb way to transport in the open bed of a truck.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Same here. The metal tonneau cover is much harder to break into then simply smashing a window on the side of the truck.
