RMR question

Hello.

I am new to the whole RMR on a pistol. A little background on the pistol i will be using. It is a M&P 9L CORE. Im looking at which brand will be a good fit for me. Ive been looking at the Trijicon Type 2 RMR. Anyone have any experience with a brand they like and why. Any pros and cons? I have an astigmatism,which im not sure if that can affect anything. Thanks in advance for all the info.

I have astigmatism too and have no problems with red dots when I wear my toric contact lenses. Different story when I take them off.

I like the rmr type2. A lot of people like to go with a bigger dot on them but I like to use the 1moa dot that way I can use it on my pistol and rifle if I decide to take it off my pistol

For a carry gun I prefer 6.5moa. Quickest dot acquisition when I need to get rounds on target. I have used 1moa dot too that was on a rifle and found it to be work just fine on my handguns.

Handgun red dots have a slower learning curve than a rifle optics. I think the bigger dot helps if you are new to MRDS.

I have astigmatism too, and i get a star burst on my rmr its not too bad but i also have a holosun 507 and a 407 that are much more clear. As for the brand trijicon is an awsome brand and us super rugged you cant go wrong if your budget permits. I only have the 1 because thats all that i can afford and it sits on one of my carry pistols. As for range toys fun guns id rather use the holosun for the price of 1 rmr i can get 2 holosuns. In my experiance i have yet to have a problem with either.

Are you planning to carry? Or just use it at the range? If using at the range I would go with an 1moa. Carry 3.25 or 6.5 but since you said you have an astigmatism then I think the 6.5 would look starburst

A big question is the intended purpose. I opted for a Vortex Viper because I'm only going to use it for competition (USPSA, Steel Challenge, etc.). It was a cheap way for me to try a red dot and I anticipate using the lifetime warranty someday.

I also appreciate the ability to use the M&P CORE iron sights because, as noted above, it seems like it's a just a matter of time before the dot dies*.

You might want to check out Sage Dynamics on youtube. He tests a lot of the available slide mounted red dot options from the viewpoint of duty/carry using a consistent battery of tests. He generally brings all of them to their breaking point.

The RMR Type 2 received a very good review especially with respect to durability from a shoulder height drop directly onto the optic. To wit:

*FWIW, the viper tested decently with Sage Dynamics. It held zero after a hundreds of rounds and a couple of drops, but the lens broke on the third drop. Aaron noted that the Viper's internal wiring/construction looked pretty solid. That being said, he wouldn't exactly recommend it for something beyond range/fun.

Oh, and if the videos seem a bit too long . . . I was able to set the playback speed to 1.75x and understand everything.

Been looking and im leaning more towards the Vortex Venom or Burris Fastfire 3. Any one have either and can give me their opinion on it? Thanks.

The venom top loads the battery so you don’t have to rezero. The Burris bottom loads and needs to be rezeroed every time you change the battery.

Burris no experiance, viper had it but was kind of a pain to zero. If it sits in front of your sights and cant tighten or loosen the set screws. Have to remove the rds or your sight to do it. Kinda of a pain if your using your irons as a starting point to zero your dot. So i went with the venom.

Seems like I'm going to go with the venom. By any chance does anyone have a Vortex Venom on a M&P with suppressor height sights? I would like to know if the venom co-witnesses with the iron sights.
