    LEGR turnaround time

Submitted a LEGR to CA doj 6 weeks ago to recover a stolen handgun. The form says they have 30 days from received date to process and give me the release. Calling the phone number gives me a message that there is no way to do follow up over the phone. Local pd said it's probably a 6 to 8 week thing but I would get chewed out for missing a deadline at work. Anyway to hold ca doj accountable? Is there a state auditor that i could file a useless complaint with?

I found similar language in writing on another part of their website that includes the justification.

California law authorizes certain governmental and private organizations to conduct criminal offender record information background checks to help determine the suitability of a person applying for employment, a professional license, or any position serving children, the elderly, or individuals with disabilities. Law enforcement agencies, public and private schools, non-profit organizations, and in-home supportive care agencies are some of the organizations authorized to conduct these fingerprint-based background checks.

"Due to the on-going fiscal crisis and hiring restrictions within State Government, effective Monday, November 08, 2010, the California Department of Justice (DOJ) no longer has the resources to take phone calls or process follow-up inquiries..."
