SFO TSA new process - under foam inspection

SFO doesn't use the TSA - its a private company (Covenant). Most screening of firearms are based on airport specific policies - which is why screening procedures vary fairly substantively from airport to airport.
There is no policy on specifically looking under foam in a case, but I can tell you that sometimes the foam obstructs the x-ray process so looking underneath it is relatively common. There are no great men. Just great challenges which ordinary men, out of necessity, are forced by circumstance to meet. -

I'm about to head back to AK next week, and I am very concerned about this.
I usually do a two layer approach in my small pelican case where the handguns are on the top layer and ammo and other small parts are on the bottom. TSA has never decided, up until the last time I flew from SFO, to dig around inside the foam, just satisfied to look that the firearms weren't loaded.
This will make an absolute mess of my system. I'm now thinking to just pack the guns in the factory cases and ammo in a separate case to avoid destroying the foam on the pelican case.
There's no way they would properly re-assemble the foam, where it resembles a jigsaw puzzle of plucked bits. Now I will need three cases instead of just the one. I really should invest in some die-cut closed-cell foam trays that would be easier to remove and replace.
What a win for the good guys; good lord what a cluster-f.Comment

I flew in and out of SFO on Alaskan 2 weeks ago. I had my carry gun in a small case inside my larger pelican case that I also use as my suitcase. I locked only the large case with non-TSA locks.
I was not contacted by TSA for any inspection and had no issues at all.

Going to hit these guys up today:
If you need custom foam, you need MyCaseBuilder. Design your own custom foam case with our easy-to-use web application.
See if they can turn around some trays, short order. I do like the long-gun cases I've gotten from Case Club, where the templated closed-cell foam is thin and glued to the open-cell foam so you get the best of both worlds. I don't think these guys will do that, but I'll see if the have the option, or to put two types together, or an ABS layer in between.Comment
