No experience with this but how do they make the container or lock safe again?
Is it left in unlocked position?

Are you using TSA locks on the outer case? It's up to them how they want to open it if they don't have the ability. Either break the lock or call you. If there isn't enough time to call you, the backlog is high, they may just force their way in and not call. Then they don't have to wait for you, and deal with you being present for the inspection. If they don't contact you, they don't have to make any effort past opening the case.

Use TSA locks for the outer container and your own lock for the firearm container inside.

I use TSA locks on my bags, they have keys to open without destroying.
I keep my firearm and ammo in a locked pelican case that is double locked, then I use a thick, rubber coated cable and another lock and lock the firearms case to the suitcase frame. Only way to take the gun is to take the entire suitcase.
I have never had my suitcase lock broken when traveling regularly from LAX to Ft Lauderdale.

Um...this is nothing new. TSA has free rein to go into your regular luggage. As long as they're not cracking your gun case, they can access the rest of the case. Whether or not they lock it again after they're done, is a crap shoot.

This is one of the reasons I use a Pelican 1615 case. My suitcase IS the gun case and vice versa. They're not supposed to go into any of it and I get to use my own locks.

They obviously aren't supposed to be destroying things though. Have you tried filing a claim?

I've lost count of the number of TSA lock's that have just plain vanished off my luggage. Usually happens at SEATAC, for some unknown reason every time I go there my luggage get's searched with the standard TSA note in the bag.

I have heard of instances where there is a central office where the keys are stored for TSA locks and some agents are too lazy to get them, or are too far away from the office at the screening area at larger airports.

I guess it's luck of the draw how incompetent or lazy they are.
