Stripped frame is not on the roster.
    Only complete guns are rostered.
You have to buy a complete gun which is on the roster.
Then after you have cleared DROS, you could could strip it down and sell all the parts you don't want.

Along these same lines -- would the complete (roster approved) handgun have to be all original parts before it's imported into CA?

^^^^^^Yes, but as Randall said, sell the parts you don't want and buy the parts you do.

^^^ If only the complete pistol can be imported, What if the parts are not original? A different slide, barrel or trigger? What if only the sights are different, or grips on a 1911, and everything else is original according to its description on the roster? Can any roster approved pistol be altered in any way and be lawfully imported into CA?

              Yes.
Guns can not be modified from the configuration in which they were rostered and still be considered compliant with the roster.
Specific model numbers are tested and certified in their factory configuration.
If you change anything, it's no longer that specific model that was rostered.
Even things like color or sights make them no longer rostered, even though those things have absolutely no effect on the safety or function of the specific model.

The need for being roster compliant ceases once you are no longer worried about such gun needing to be transferred through a dealer.
So once you have it in your possession, it does not matter if you make it roster non-compliant as long as you don't need to worry about transferring it to a dealer who wants to be able to re-sell it to the general public.
Non-roster-compliant guns can be freely transferred through private party transfers.

If the parts are made from a different material or have different dimensions and effect the handgun's barrel, chamber, magazine well, or any component of the firing mechanism; then the handgun is considered a different one from what is listed.

                  No.
It needs to be factory original as the model was tested and certified.

So lets say you are looking to purchase XYZ Gun Company Model 55.
If XYZ Gun Company's Model 55 was originally tested with a 5" barrel and a polished stainless slide and meprolight night sights and you import a model 55 with an original 5" barrel, original polished stainless slide and meprolight night sights but you can not prove that those parts were not swapped from a different serial number gun as yours because they are exactly the same, nobody is likely to stop that transfer because the gun is fundamentally the same as when it was first sold by XYZ Gun Company.

However, if the gun originally came with a polished stainless slide and yours arrives at your transfer dealer with an aftermarket barrel and tan Ceracoat on the slide, you are going to have a problem.
