    22 CB shorts & S&W 617

Now I've looked around & didn't find anything on this.

So will ask the brain trust here. Needing a small varmint gun (minimal nose for night), & looking to the S&W 22 617 for fruit pouching coons. (unincorporated rural town)

Has any one fire 22CB shorts from their 617 ?

If so how was the accuracy at short range 30 ft or less ? (likely less)

    As always, thanks

I have shot Colibri through my 617 with no issue.
They are long rifle though, not shorts.
They have no powder so they are basically CB longs.
    They are not quiet.

    A suppressed airgun is quieter.

Can't say why this is but for me, cb long are quieter than the cb shorts in the same guns. Get a small box of each and try both.

The shorts have more pressure, less space between the bullet and the charge(primer). That makes them louder then the longs.

Forgot to add, at thirty feet, the gun and ammo are not the problem, I am. I've been woken up by the dogs at 4:00 AM on International Hangover Day and have missed the heart or brain case from that distance.

The only gun I might not trust at that distance is a little Beretta 950 in .22 short.

Any quiet .22 rounds are LOUD out of a handgun. It defeats the purpose.

Use a .22 rifle for CCI Quiet's, CB Longs, or CB Shorts. Bolt actions are usually the most quiet.

Yet some are not recommended for use in rifles because they occasionally do not leave the barrel.
I have stuck many colibris in a rifle barrel.
              They push out real easy.
Just need to watch for your impacts and clear the barrel when one does not make it out.

I've shot Aguila SUPER Colibri (advertised at 590 fps) out of a 16" barrel with no problems. I've also shot CCI Quiets out of the same barrel and they are not all that quiet. I have heard that they need to be shot from a 20"+ barrel to have effective sound suppression.

                  Agreed. That's why I didn't mention Colibris.

I've had better luck with Super Colibris, but still wouldn't trust them.

For some reason I trust CCI products to leave my rifle barrels.

In my experience, none of the quiet rounds are very accurate or precise.

Strangely, some lots of quiet 22 rounds are very quiet, other production lots are quite loud.

This brings back a great memory. About 20 years ago my Dad and I were across the street talking with the neighbor about how we suspected a large rat was living in the garage. Just about then the neighbor points and says "he just ran out of the garage!" Sure enough, there he went scurrying toward the front bushes. Dad loaded up a single shot Winchester 22 loaded with a little CB cap and that did the trick! I've never fired one from a pistol but we took out plenty of rodents over the years with the long gun.

Picked up my new 617 in Dec. Beautiful revolver. Only shot it 1 time 'cause out of a new box of 100 CCI at least 30 jammed up because they sat too proud of the cylinder. Other brands no problem.

As for taking care of those varmits: try the 22lr shotshells by (CCI??) Not cheap but they can be effective. Not very loud. Did not recycle my Buckmark. 617-no recycling

They are much louder out of a revolver v a semi auto pistol. Due to cylinder gap. Fired many bricks of them from a Ruger revolver. Semi U of course have to manually work slide.

For something as tough as a coon. You might consider a used Sheridan Blue Streak 5mm/20 cal. And their old "solid" pellets. Never a coon, but plenty of possum went in the trash can for being in front of mine. Also consistent "whacks" on jacks and cottontails. Out to 50 yds.

This has been my experience as well with .22 cb shorts in the old days.
