    Livermore Steel Fun Shoot

    Livermore Steel Fun Shoot

When: Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday night (5 to 9 PM) with lights, next Shoot Wednesday May 15th.

Where: 4000 Dagnino Rd. Livermore CA 94551

What: This is set-up like the Steel Challenge with 5 steel plates.
You will start shooting from the "Low Ready" position, no holster draws so all can participate. You will shoot the string of plates 5 times with shooting times being recorded and given to you. We also use Practice Score and post scores on that site.

Cost: Members $5.00 per session of 5 shooting strings or 5 stages for $20.00, non-members, $10.00 per stage or 3 stages for $25.00. Shooters spending at least $20.00 can shoot paper until 9:00 pm at no additional charge.

WE suggest: If you have 5 magazines or if shooting a revolver at least 5 speed loads. It is still OK if you don't but it speeds things up if you do.

No: High power rounds such as 357 or 44 mag or rifle calibers.

Ammo: Yes, you can shoot your reloads and we have a Lab Radar to verify velocity. We also sell ammo.

This is very similar to Steel Challenge plate shooting so if you were thinking about that this would be a good way to be introduced to it without any pressure. Shooting steel is a blast, the different size plates sound different notes as they are hit. Ring the steel!!!

I RSO'd the shooting table last time, my favorite was a father and son (about 13 I think) that came through 3 times shooting Dad's 22. They had a great time and his son was giving him a little challenge! The course will change from event to event with us trying to stay to the published Steel Challenge courses. If you are a perfect shooter then all you will need is 25 rounds per session, I strongly advise you to bring more.

We have great hopes for this and would like to expand it, but of course we need support. If we get support then we can add another course or more plus we want to add some shooting games such as the Texas Wheel and a Dueling Tree. We will even consider opening earlier (1 PM ?). It all depends on support. Some of us would also like to see a food truck show up but to do so they need people.

So show up, shoot, have some fun and help us build fun shooting events that the whole family can enjoy.

Sounds like fun. How many people normally attend?

You mentioned a 12 year old shooter. Are there any age restrictions and/or caliber restrictions for younger shooters?

I was mistaken, he was 13 or older.

All handguns are 13 and older. We do have youth shooting on the 2nd and 4th Thursday nights, we provide the 22 rifles (or bring your own) and they can shoot as young as 6.

Once you shoot steel it is hard to shoot paper again.

We just started this quietly 2 weeks ago. The wait time was 5 minutes or less.

boopiejones, if you have a 12 year old the Richmond range has the rimfire challenge events several times a year. I've done that with my 12 year old and he's enjoyed it. You shoot both .22 rifle and pistol at steel. The next one is May 26th.

BrassCase, it sounds like a fun event but honestly a little on the expensive side. $10 to shoot at 25 targets. Compare to the rimfire challenge where you shoot about 200 targets for $20, or San Leandro's steel shoot where most people shoot until they run out of ammo. Maybe once you have more steel you might consider switching to San Leandro's model and allow shooters unlimited rounds (taking turns) for a set fee?

Sounds interesting! I've never shot in any competition before. At what distance are the steel targets typically?

I read through the PSC faq and couldn't find it: https://lprg.org/activities/pistol-s...g-competition/

Here are the Steel Challenge stages. Don't know if this club is using the same dimensions.

Suggestion - other clubs that are doing this allow a shooter to use a .22, a centerfire pistol, and a pistol caliber carbine. Meaning a shooter can take up to three runs, paying the fee for each one of course.

About the cost, I know it does seem a little expensive. One thing is that the shooter doesn't do any painting, set-up or tear down. Our single greatest expense is the ballistic panels used for the roof of the shooting table. The roof is there to prevent someone from shooting over the hill (and ending our fun) and it is about $700.00, plus the steel and timers etc. I think it is costing us about $2,000.00 just to get going, But still...

I have suggested that some discounts be made. Buy multiple rounds for less, all night pass etc. It helps if you guys send e-mails to club saying so as well.

How was the Steel Shoot on the 1st? I was busy on Weds but am hoping to visit on May 15. I might bring my dad to test out his new Ruger SR1911 I bought him. Neither of us have shot steel before. Is the 15 minute Safety Orientation given prior to 5pm or is it available when we arrive? Depending on traffic, we are looking at 5:30/6.

                              Update on pricing:

                              Members: 5 rounds for $20.00
                              Non-members: 3 rounds for $25.00
Both plans include access to shoot at the rifle/pistol range at no additional charge. For members it would be $10.00 and non-members $20.00 so that is also a nice savings. Bring a rifle or pistol and target shoot on the big range for free.

I'll try and find out which course is planned for this Wednesday night.

Please let me know if there is any interest in the range opening earlier in the day on Wednesday (currently open at 5 PM).
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...
