    IMHO... nothing beats a simplex pistol safe. I’m about restricting access for my children rather than hiding in plain sight. But ymmv...

      I actually already have the V-Line brute and top shelf. I may look into a desk mate model and just mount it vertically between the wall and our entertainment system.

          +1. There are also enough of these types of "covert furniture" pieces on the market they're not much of a secret anymore. Some of them have locking mechanisms built in but so far I've only seen them where you need to have a magnet or some type of physical key to access them. Which means you either have to have the key on your person or find a hiding place for that too. I think the simplex lock boxes are better all the way around. YMMV.
