My suggestion would be a Zanotti Armor modular safe, but that is more than your budget.

Given time, no safe is foolproof. Buy a decent safe and back it up with multiple layers of electronic surveillance. You should have the ability to know if someone is in your apartment and anywhere near your safe. Simplisafe is relatively cheap and portable, and home automation systems allow you to install additional motion and vibration sensors. Add a cheap camera with motion detection capability and you can verify any alerts from a sensor from almost anywhere in the world.

If you’re looking to keep kids or other people who live with you out, the. A stack on gun cabinet or locker is fine. If you want security from criminals or fire protection, I would buy the best safe I could afford. It’s also nice if you one or more of the following:
          Cool/nosey neighbors
          Dogs
          Video surveillance
          Somebody always at the house

Both 12/14g and fire rated safes can be cut easily. Question is, do you need the weight and formaldehyde?

If you can carry it in, someone else can carry it out. And they do.

A Job Box is better than either inexpensive safes or gun cabinets.

That's why you bolt down all security cabinets to the floor and walls. Even safes are bolted to the floor so they can't be tipped and pried at.

I have this, can be moved with a single person, I did it myself.

                    I also have this one:

It is heavier and you will need 2 person to move it but can go under your bed with plenty of space for handguns and will fit an AR with 16" barrel and optics. Bonus point in that you'll feel like badazz because you can now roll off your bed, open the safe and go to town with your guns.

Those slider lockers use standard sliding rails and can be disengaged and separated. One person can move the drawer and frame separately and reassemble where it will stay.

I bought a cheap safe. It was a cheap Liberty safe. Only 2k delivered. 1776-64 and compared to there other safes it was a cheap one.

Really... a pro will have most any safe you would reasonably buy. A heavy duty cabinet bolted down will deter most amateurs & children, at least it's better than nothing.

Hopefully a heavier duty safe will make things difficult enough that a thief will move on, but if a pro really wants what YOU got...

I have mostly pistols. (Four rifles).

I’m just looking for something passable for apartment life in L.A.

                            Suggestions?
Passable for keeping kids out or from a common burglary?

A cheap safe/cabinet will be easy to defeat, even at the door. On a better quality safe the body will be the most vulnerable (when bolted down). If you can lay the safe on it's back the door can be pried much easier as you can get all your weight on the crowbar.

Safe placement helps if you can place it between a couple walls to protect the sides and the wall could make it harder to pry on the door if it's in the right place.

This is from a customer who's handgun safe (7 GA steel) deterred a thief better than their gun cabinet did.

"Wanted to let you know that a few weeks ago we had a burglary and the dude found the FAS1 by my bed and it appears he tried to pry it open and failed. He got away with plenty of stuff, and the Stack On security cabinet didn't keep him from some of my long guns... but he didn't get my pistols, thanks in part to your product."
I still think the best value, especially in an apartment and if you frequently move is a Zanotti Armor modular safe. Money well spent vs the cheap options. The door is 3/16" (7ga) plate and the body is 1/8" (11ga) plate steel. They are made better than 90% of welded gun safes.

The other benefit is everyone in the apartment doesn't see you move a safe into your place. They just think you went to IKEA.

Ding ! Ding ! Ding ! We have a winner!

I purchased a use, newer model Knaack job box at a local yard sale last year for $50. Model 4824 IIRC. Approx. 48" x 24" x28". Dirty, paint scraped but no dents or rust.

After about 2 hours of "soap & water elbow grease" and later sitting all day in the hot sun, it was ready for paint. 6 spray cans of flat black paint from Walmart ($5) for the interior / exterior. Added a new #5 Master keyed lock ($15) and its ready to go to work.

Because of its size & weight (approx.150 lbs empty) it can be easily moved into a home plus it doesn't look like a "safe" to your noisy neighbors. It has built in interiors side rails if you want to build selves or leave it "open" for more storage space.

Store it in plain view, covered with a solid colored sheet and you have perfect TV stand or ? Filled with several cases of ammo & other items , the routine Crackhead(s) ain't going to "haul it out' or force their way into it with their large Craftsman screwdriver with the 1/2' bite.

For $70, you have a secure storage metal box that you take with you when you move. BTW Knaack is a step up from Ridgid, Jobox, etc. and the other big box stores brands. Great box for the money.

                              Good Luck!

Try and get that past your landlord. Not going to happen in a rental unit. You are better hiding the 1911 in a zip lock bag in the bottom of the kitty litter.
