Hunting Rifle Mag Capacities

I've seen semi auto hunting rifles in 30-06, 308, 300wsm etc

they usually come with standard 2-5 round capacity (2 or 3 for the magnums).

Then I saw this.

I didn't know there were companies that made expanded mags for these rifles.

Now I was wondering, the Browning BAR hunting rifle in 7mm rem magnum, has a 3 round magazine in semi-auto... would it e possible to get a 8-10 rd magazine? I'm not 100% sure how the rifle is designed though or are there other brands?

I was poking around for 10rd BAR mags and did not find any. Since it is marketed as a hunting rifle they figure that if you need more then a few rounds you have no buisness hunting game. That last thing you want is 10 rounds in a deer and 1 mile of blood trail. Very sad

Since Ca and many other states limits capacity to

while hunting big game, the manufactures probably did not see the need to offer larger capacity mags for semi autos rifles designed for hunting.

I dont' think CA has any restrictions on rifle capacity while hunting, just shotguns. I just skimmed the big game regs and haven't found any changes wrt rifle capacities.

yup, no mag restrictions for hunting in CA...if you had 30 rd. mags before the ban you could use 'em

Well, I'm not an active hunter, I would like to be one day.

I shoot for enjoyment... and since all the good rifles are banned... hunting rifles are the closest things we can get without hugely modifying a rifle.

Remington 742/7400s have semi 308/30-06 have 10 round magazines available from midwayusa.com

Considering the 742/7400 are 1/2 the price of the average semi rifle of those calibers and the ones we can afford are banned... they could work as a cheap substitute. Perhaps even cut down the barrel some and add a completely different stock. Maybe we can create some semi-auto carbines.

Rather than modifying these good rifles to be neutered (fals & ars)... why not get decent rifles and make them better.

Yep. NO mag restrictions EXCEPT FOR SHOTGUNS; dont ask me why but the same cincher that says no more than 3 rounds for upland game and waterfowl is THE SAME for hunting with a shotgun when going after either 'non-game' like coyotes or even big game. Have been around this particular issue aabout 6 dozen times with wardens in the field, calls, e-mails nad what nots to both regional and to Sacramento trying to get some kind of a clearer feel for what they are/were thinking. But rifles there is NO limit, for shotguns....whatever you're hunting, there are.....

742/7400's are a bit heat sensitive. Point of impact tends to shift as the barrel heats up, say, after 5, 10, 20, 100 rounds... Also, the action, while fine for a hunting rifle, isn't nearly as robust as the military based designs (e.g. M1A/Garand/Mini-14, AR's, AK's, FAL's, etc.) if you want to be able to shoot hundreds or thousands of rounds through it annually. Lastly, it's said that they are very difficult to clear out certain types of jams.

I have an old 742 and it's a fine deer rifle. The point of inpact does string vertically for me as the barrel heats up after a few shots...

A good alternative might be to shop around for a deal on a Mini-14 to use as a fun semi-auto target shooting gun/blaster. Not as pricey as fixed mag AR's, etc.

I also have a Remington 7600P in .308: 16 in. barrel, Wilson Combat ghost rear aperture sight, XS Big Dot front sight. Nice little pump rifle. Loud, a 'bit' of muzzle flash.. : ) Like a skinny 870. Tried some aftermarket 10 rd. mags with it. Watch those pinkies though. Can get pinched between the foreend and the extended mags when pumping back (ow!). The stock factory 4 rd. mag is flush/tapered, so it's not a problem.

The Big Dot front sight is fast, but not really a precision sight. Setup makes for a good 50 yd. or less carbine. A red-dot optic might be cool for speed and longer distance accuracy, but it's not in my budget right now...

Remington also offers a .223 version that accepts AR-15 mags.

H&S Precision makes a kit for the Rem 700 it IS pricey.. $220+ Brownells carries it.....
