According to KRON New Station, our local Gang-Bangers are using Hwy 4 near Anioch and the Richmond stretch of road as a shooting area.
Heck, I bet they are even using magnetic FMJs. Who needs to pay range fees?

If you're talking about pristine, unshared open land - you're out of luck. There's pretty much no public land nearby open for shooting that's not as far as Panoche.

Richmond Rod and Gun and San Leandro have outdoor public ranges out to 100 yards. With membership I think the Richmond range lets you go out to 200.

In South Bay Los Altos and Sunnyvale have ranges out to 100 yards. Los Altos also has a tin can range which can be fun. Santa Clara public range has a range out to 200 yards but it's only open on a weekday except for some Sundays in which case it's crowded.

Good places. Sunnyvale has some weird public hours and limited space so def check their calendar and plan on getting there at least 30 mins before it opens so you can be assured of a spot.

I mostly shoot at Los Altos, plenty of spaces but one thing that does annoy the crap out of me is that their 50 yard range is built on a hill and while the tables are level, the ground is not and it can be pretty challenging to get comfortable when your stool is canted in some weird direction.

If you shoot a lot, consider joining the Sunnyvale Rod and Gun Club as a member. You'll be able to shoot during members only days/hours and it is free to shoot rifle/pistols. And you can do all the double-tap and mag dump you want so long as you do it safely.

If you just shoot occasionally, Los Altos is a better place as it is bigger with more lanes. Sunnyvale can get really crowded and you'll have a long wait times for rifle/pistol range.

No one mentioned Yolo Sportsmen, near Yolo County Airport. It’s low key, they have trap and skeet for shotguns, 7,15,25,50 yard ranges for now, the 100 yard range is close at the moment, waiting for barricades to be finished. They have USPSA and Cowboy Action matches too, but the USPSA matches are full in 5 minutes once they’re announced due to too many shooters, and not enough spots...

                    1) The indoor range in Tracy at Elite Armory Plus (the old Tracy Rifle & Pistol location) about 32 miles (30-40 mins) east of GFOS in Dublin and is easily accessible by taking 580 east to 205, exiting at MacArthur, and

                    2) The outdoor range at the Linden about 18 miles east of Stockton which is located about 65 miles (1-1.5 hrs) east of GFOS in Dublin and should be less than 2.5 hrs from where ever you live in the Bay Area.

I live in the far East Bay near Antioch and these 2 ranges are currently my favorites, depending on the type of shooting that I want to do. I prefer them both to Livermore, which like you say is "ok" but has more negatives than positives for my taste, where I only shoot when there's no better choice available. However, they can both get very busy on weekends; best to visit there during the week instead if you can.

The drive out to Linden is actually quite easy once you learn the route and there is no traffic to speak of once you pass Stockton. They have a 50/100/200 yd rifle range and have a action pistol "club." However, the pistol lines aren't as good as Livermore or Tracy. So, I go to Linden just to shoot rifles.

I go to Tracy to shoot pistols (or sight in rifles). I have gone to Richmond to shoot action pistol and 3gun; still have my eligibility card but haven't gone there for that for a long time. Use to be a member of the Diable Action Pistol club, where I preferred to go, but that's been impossible since they closed down over 2 years ago. And, again, I only go to Livermore when I can't go to these other places instead.

BTW, it's worth the trek out to Linden just to be able to stop at Lagorio's Grill and Bar (a local dive bar and biker hangout on the weekends) in Farmington on Hwy 4, which has a pretty good food menu and specializes in serving grilled oysters drenched in butter which is AMAZING! I stop there for beer and oysters everytime after shooting at Linden.

We live in Antioch and enjoy The Gun Range (in-door) up in North Sac. Takes us about 1 hr to get there but well worth it for us. They have 2 separate ranges. 1 is 12 yds and has 5 lanes. The other is 20yds I believe, and has 3 - 5 lane rooms. They have a good variety of rentals also if you want to try out plus well stocked for sale pistols/rifles and misc. including reloading items.

Yep, I like Yolo. Became a member there after USI closed down. When the 100y closed at Yolo I started going to Sac Valley. Very nice and have a 300y public range.

Circle S near tomales/petaluma in marin county isn't 2.5 hours away. They have 25, 50, 100-300 yard lines. The guys are grumpy if you mess up and don't listen or want to fire quickly they will yell. It's $15 cash only and you can shoot as long as you want (thurs-sun only for public).
It's not a great place by any means but once you get a hang of their rules it's fine. If you want a lot of time on the long 300yrd lines you need to show up early at least on sunday as they open at 8am. It's sit down only but covered for the long lines.

I live out in the far Eastbay as well. As far as indoor ranges, Tracy is the way to go. Good ventilation and digital lane hardware so u know exactly how far out you are. That being said, it’s indoors and only 25 yards. Good for pistol or the first step in sighting a long gun.
Manteca has a 100yd range only, so if you want anything else, your out of luck.
Sac valley has a great range and you can go 25, 50, or 100yds. Then if you qualify you can go out to 200yds.
Sac valley is a bit of a drive but you can make a great day of it. They have all kinds of options. 22 rim fire reactive range, pistol, rifle, trap, etc.

Then if you want true outdoor area, there are all kinds of places on blm land, just east of us.
Up hwy 4, 88, and 50. Just get up into the national forest land and there are all kinds of places.
Most of us won’t reveal our favs, cause suddenly more nut jobs you can’t clean up behind themselves show up and ruin the place and it gets shut down.
You can get a map of the blm land and check with the local ranger stations to see where you are not allowed to be and then just find a safe place that meets the legal requirements and you can access
