Hmm, I don't have too much experience with the revolvers just their older semis.
The only S&W revolver I have is a J frame and it doesn't have anything I'd call a retainer. Just the threaded inserts that the grip screw screws into and thats metal and not likely replaceable should something happen to it.
I know we have some real experts on board and hopefully one will be along as this reply of mine isn't much help I'm afraid.

Are you talking about the backing for the emblem?
The emblem has a stud on the back side that is part of the emblem.
This stud is peened over at the end to hold the backing on.
It's pretty much a one-time-use set up.

That said, you could try to pry the backer off and press fit the new backer on. When removing the backer try not to remove any material from the stud.
You will have to support the face of the emblem to push fit the new backer on.
Try some scraps of leather to pad the emblem and a c-clamp pushing on a thick washer for the backer.
