I doubt they were successful in gun sales anyway. All they did was sell overpriced crappy .22 rifles and cellar Remington garbage.

I frequent Martin B Redding in Culver City. There is always a wait and I see test takers every time I go in there, which equates to first time gun owners or owners who have not purchased since the test began. Or they could also be updating an expired cert. Either way they are always busy, as was Elite in Manteca before they decided to neglect Manteca and move the business to Texas.
That could be, except I have an idea our huge new immigrant population (legal and illegal) have a negative view of RKBA .

Sad. I literally bought my first gun - a Maverick 88 - from Dick's at Southland Mall in Hayward back a few years ago. Now I won't set foot in one.
I have a Dick's in my community. (BTW I can't stand the community I live in). I have never stepped foot in there all the years it has been open. Once I heard of their anti-gun stance, I decided to never go there. If it closes, I will not notice. There are many other options to buy stuff you need besides going to Dick's. There are gun dealers everywhere who would be appreciative if you decide to buy from them.

I don't even like the name of the store. Sounds like a bunch of corporate brainwashed Di*<'s. Don't be nostalgic about where you bought your first gun, it doesn't matter at all. All that matters is that you keep buying more guns.

Because this boom of the last few years was based on nothing other than fear, gun sales are down, dramatically. Across the board. Across the country. Someone may dispute/correct these but the figures I recall because it was such a dramatic statistic, in 1980 fifty percent of American households had firearms in them. Today it is less than thirty. That folks, is a big(!) difference in nearly forty years. That's a lot less money going to retail sales of firearms. 1980's retail also did not have to compete with on-line vendors with little overhead. The times they are a changin' folks.

I was in the retail business for some years. Retail is about inventory turns. You want to make your nets (2% ten net thirty gets you a 2% discount on the invoice provided its paid/postmarked in ten days) and turn the dollar value of your inventory three times every year in order to be make a profit.

If Dick's Sporting goods can get more dollars in sales from that square footage and inventory turns by putting that money into something other than firearms, that's what they are going to do.

In this case they are using this posture to leverage some free publicity. Advertising is expensive. As PT Barnum said; "Say whatever you want about me, just don't misspell my name".

Further, firearms sales require specialized knowledge, procedures, licenses, training and day to day expenses that fewer and fewer non gun stores are willing to incur. It helps if you're willing to pay folks more than minimum wage. But that, is a different conversation.

Retail is becoming more and more specialized. With folks at the top and the bottom of any market and not a lot in between. With a few notable exceptions, the days of the department stores are pretty much over.

Cue the right wing indignation/outrage/whining/thin-skinned petty vindictiveness and shrieking condemnation.

            It's just business.

The sky is not falling. The world will not come to an end. The proverbial Republic shall somehow endure.

Get over it. Support your LGS folks. Or they will go away too. Think about that the next time you order something on Gunbroker to save $20 on a multi-hundred dollar firearm.
I think many small gun shops will still survive as many seem to be hobby businesses where the owner does not rely on it as sole source of income. If they get a decent retirement pension or have another source of income like a spouse that works as long as they make a few bucks and can pay the rent and utilities some seem content.

Like Walmart I doubt a huge percentage of Dick's sales are from firearms and ammunition.

Right on Cue, its Leftist Ideologue sfarchitect, with his Endless
              Supply of Unsubstantiated Nonsense
              to regurgitate.

With his inherent sense of Moral Superiority over all us Calguns
Deplorables, and on his High Horse of Identity Politics, he is here
to inform us "it was just a Business Decision" you stupid Rubes...

And yet, the Headlines tell a different story of a deliberate, politically
motivated attack on Gun Owners that they knew would be Bad for
              Business:

Dick's Sporting Goods Hires Lobbyists to
Press Congress for Gun Control Laws
The Truth About Guns. May 2, 2018

"It apparently doesn't matter Dick's CEO, Edward Stack, that he's
alienated a significant percentage of his customers. He's bound and
determined to move the gun control ball forward.
As Stack wrote in the Washington Post in March..."

"This issue transcends our company's bottom line.
We suspected that speaking out would have a negative
impact on our business. But this was about our values
and standing up for what we think is right."

              ============= End Quotes ================

So there you have it folks. CEO Edward Stack knew this would likely
negatively affect the company, and did it anyway, so he could get the
Company Woke, (any maybe Broke) with his Virtue Signaling Horse Sh*t.

              Originating Article:

              The Federalist. May 2, 2018
Dick's Sporting Goods, under fire for banning legal rifle sales, just hired a lobbying firm to push for gun control, federal records show.

If our Constitutional Republic Survives, sfarchitect, it certainly

Democrats and their Gun Control, Illegal Immigration, Open Borders,
Sanctuary Cities, Leftist Big Tech tossing the concept of "Free Speech"

You know Nothing about the NRA, other than what is regurgitated to

Just to reemphasize that the CEO of Dick's has Gone Full Potato,
that this was a Political Decision to support Gun Control, NOT
a "Business Decision" to somehow help Dick's improve their
                Sales and Income....

Law Enforcement Today. Mar 13, 2019
Law Enforcement Today, previously the largest police-owned media outlet in America, was purchased by The 1776 Project, LL...

                Emphasis mine.
While the Sandy Hook Shooting was the event that led Mr. Stack
to begin implementing these changes in his stores, it was in 2016
that he made political motives clear when his sister Karen Meyer
was running for Congress in the 22nd Congressional District as a
Democrat. Mr. Stack, a lifetime gun owner himself and major
Republican donor, did a complete 180 in 2016 when he aligned
himself with outspoken gun control activists and even made a big
contribution to a super PAC supporting Democratic Leader
Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats back in 2016.

So in 2016 he went from Republican to Anti-2A Democrat, and is
using Dick's to support his Virtue Signaling Anti-2A Nonsense,
knowing full well it would harm the company.

Banning a Popular Rifle is just plain Idiotic.
Rifles are Not the weapon of choice for Homicides:

                Year Sequence ..... 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017
                Homicides:
                by Rifle (All Types) 285 258 258 378 403

                Blunt objects (clubs, etc.) 428 446 450 479 467

                Personal (hands, fists, feet, etc.) 687 682 659 669 696

As you can plainly see from the FBI Data, More people are killed
by Blunt Objects like hammers, or even just Hands & Feet than
All Types of Rifles, (so AR15 would be a subset, lower number)
so CEO Stack should ban hammers and hands, it would be more
effective, along with Bicycles (More people are killed riding bikes
than are killed by rifles. Last time I checked about 750 people
are killed each year riding bikes.)

Stack estimated worth is 1.2 Billion, so add his name to the list of
Rich Elitists trying to disarm American Citizens, while they
themselves live in protected gilded enclaves, with high walls
                and security.
