S&W 29-2

Thinking about buying this 1976 29-2. It's 1100. The other option would be a new one for about 850. That gap between the grip and frame look normal in the last photo?

Any of you guys who know more than me, see anything I should be concerned with?

I wondered about that. They have S&W medallions but something looks off to me. Also Everyone talks about the Fit and Finish of these old guns, but most of the ones I've seen turn up on Gun Broker the stocks don't set flush with the frame.

If you have a chance to inspect the gun do it. I bought a set of NOS period correct target grips for my 66-1 (kept the original issue pachemyer presentation grips) but they fit completely flush on the bottom of the back strap.

If the gun is in great shape I would see if the seller would take $900. That gives you a little wiggle room to find a set that matches.

That 29-2 looks fine. As far as the grips,no they may not look like a perfect
fit but they have great grain and color. The rest of the gun looks fine,too.
I personally don’t like the barrel length but if you do get it. That 29 is
a far better revolver then a new one would be imho.

Yeah, I think $1100 is pretty good these days. I paid the same for the last N frame I bought, a 6" 57 no dash that's a little rougher than this one. I'd jump on this.

4th & 8th pic - looks like sight insert has been glued back in (can be easily fixed with a kit from Brownell's)

Pic of cylinder (19 I think - might of lost count) look at the top charge hole. there is a line on the bottom of the hole that looks like a crack. Probably just grunge but inspect before you buy.

Above issues aside if it checks out I'd rather have the 29-2 than I new one. IMHO the 29-2 will always be worth more.

The 29-2 was made during the late 70s and early 80s and S&W had some quality control issues during this period. At a minimum you need to verify the trigger returns on its own after firing and does not hang-up or bind; ensure the cylinder end shake is no more than .001-.002”; and verify it is in time. I have seen all these issues at times in S&W revolvers of this vintage.

It's a Bangor Punta gun. One of Smith's lowest times. Almost all of my bad Smith purchases were BP era guns. Pass at that price.
