Making an sks 922r compliant

I want to buy an sks and throw on a tapco or sage chassis on it. Would I have to switch a few parts to american made parts in order to make it compliant? I would also like to put on a detachable mag. ( I know I have to make it featureless by fixing the stock and adding a grip fin) how many parts and which 1s should I change if that's the case?

If it's a Chinese or Russian SKS or it says SKS anywhere on it or it was DROSed as a SKS, you can't put a detachable mag. It's banned by name, regardless of features. An "SKS with detachable magazine" is an assault weapon. I think the consensus is that a Yugo 59/66 isn't an SKS for the purpose of the law, but IDK.

Yes, you would have to switch a few American made parts to make it compliant. I've never heard of a private citizen being prosecuted for 922r violations. Unless you video record it or post about it online, it's virtually impossible to prove, and the ATF isn't going around looking for 922r violations. Also, the detachable mag is stupid. They're notoriously unreliable.

The SKS is a great rifle the way it was designed. Putting a detachable magazine is a no go, and reduces reliability.

Shoot it the way it was designed to be shot and enjoy it. Save your money and buy ammo.

If you want something with a detachable magazine get a Ruger Mini-14 or Mini-30. They are great rifles and are reliable. Just don’t put a folding/collapsible stock on it or a flash hider.

As mentioned, you can not put a detachable mag on a SKS in California. Even it it doesn't say SKS on it, I wouldn't put one on a SKS style rifle to be the test case for the DOJ.

Since you say you want to buy one to Bubba up, I assume you don't already own one, if that's the case, as also mentioned buy a Ruger Mini series rifle and go to Bubba town on it.

For 922R you can not have more than ten of the listed parts of foreign manufacture, doesn't matter how many US parts there are, so you have to see what of these 20 apply, then make sure you have ten or less of foreign manufacture.

Of the important parts list you may be wondering which parts apply to the SKS rifle, well an unmodified SKS anyway. The parts that fall under the SKS is the receiver, the barrel, muzzle attachments, the bolt and bolt carrier, the gas piston, the trigger housing, trigger, hammer, sear, disconnector, butt stock, forearms, magazine body, follower, and magazine floor plates. This is sixteen parts. So when you modify your rifle you’ll have to replace at least six pieces on an SKS with American made pieces. An American magazine for the SKS would take up three total parts itself.
