How Often Do You Completely Disassemble and Clean?

    I'm just curious again...

How often do you completely disassemble and clean your firearms?

Maybe not removing every pin and individual part, but something noticeably more detailed than a 'standard' field strip.

Rarely. Well it depends. If I shoot corrosive ammo the right after I get back from the range.

1911s, every 3-4 months and this is after at least 12K rounds. Plastic guns, I'm still working on what to do with the frame components, but no way I'm going to disassemble an HK P2000 frame.

A few months ago I deep cleaned my .22 semi auto rifle that I purchased new about 35 years ago. I was surprised that it was still running reliably with all that gunk in the action.

With AR’s, after each use. They break down so swiftly and effortlessly there’s no excuse not to.

Guns that mostly sit in the safe I clean after a range trip. When I had working guns, right before the last range session before work, and then usually not again until I was home. I wouldn't carry a freshly cleaned weapon that I hadn't fired after reassembly.

As a 22 not every time I shoot it but after 1000 rds, break it down for
complete cleanup. Looks better, too. Almost 60 year old handgun deserves
                a little respect.

As often as I disassemble my car engine to wash it...

Once a year I give it a thorough cleaning. Except the barrel, which is never.

Depends on the amount of use and the environment in which i was shooting ..or if i have nothing else to do

I took the OPs question to mean something beyond field stripping.

So for an AR, something like removing gas blocks and muzzle devices and what not.

Personally I have been entertaining removing my muzzle brake to see what the heck has accumulated there.

About a year ago I had to remove/deep clean the FCG from the lower, as it seems that when you hose it out with brake cleaner, something in the CLP I use created some white gummy mess.

I personally have now adopted the "leave the lower alone" philosphy. I look inside for any major debris but if there is enough oily crap in their to prevent rust, I say good enough and leave it be.

I usually dont do a complete disassembly , it causes more wear if you disassemble a firearm too often, pins get loose, some parts are staked in and shouldnt be removed unless damaged or replaced.

some people disassemble their firearms so much it looks like a rental or police academy trainer thats been tossed around a 1000 times

and the gun only has one owner
