I was looking through S&W revolvers and something caught my eye. On the barrel lug it states " no less than 120 grain bullet". Why is that? I realize it is the Sc model but what effect would a light bullet have if fired through these revolvers?

Do you mean the twist may be too fast?http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=764869 M1 ammo for saleComment

No he means the pressures are so extreme inside the chamber upon ignition that a petite projectile can literally shatter during travel down the barrel.Originally posted by eckerphDo you mean the twist may be too fast?Comment

Huh?Originally posted by radioactivelegoNo he means the pressures are so extreme inside the chamber upon ignition that a petite projectile can literally shatter during travel down the barrel.
Just about all factory ammunition is loaded to a similar maximum safe pressure by the ammunition manufacturers irregardless of what weight projectile you are shooting. For example, in the 357 magnum revolver most manufacturers load their ammunition to about 42,000-45,000 CUP. This is for all bullet weights. The SAAMI specification for pressure limits are for the cartridge and are not dependent upon bullet weight.Last edited by Fjold; 10-20-2006, 12:29 PM.Frank

according the S&W its has to do with the faster burning powders used in those bullet weights. The faster burning powder erodes the alloy frame and cylinder.
Also the sharper recoil of the lighter bullets can also cause bullet creep in such a light weight gun.Comment
