So my step dad isnt doing to well, and he has a decent collection of guns that he has aquired over the years. We were talking and he asked if i would like them. He is a little old school (grew up on a ranch in texas) so some of these guns were recieved in trade for work or other things. My question is how would i go about checking these guns to make sure they are legit, and registered to him or even in this state? Not sure if it matters but a they are a few older s&w .357's a ruger p89, a s&w .38 and some shotguns and 1 or 2 lever action rifles.

Most States do not require Gun Registration, so if he acquired them in some other State, there is no check to conduct.
1st off is your Step Father in California? Is so when did he move out here? Did he bring the guns when he came out?
Prior to 1991, California did no require gun registration, so there are many pistols out there that are still not in the system, and they are legit.
If he bought anything after 91 it would have been registered, so that's not an issue.
Basically the guns are cool, as long as they were here before the laws went into effect, they are o.k.
I'm sure your next question is "How do I get them?", well since he's your Step Father he cannot just give them to you, unless you were legally adopted by him.
By law the guns are also your Mother's(if they are still married), she can just give them to you, and all you need to do is fill out the DoJ Intrafamilial transfer form and send in $19 with it.
That's it,
When you fill out the form, you will then be registering the guns, 2 things, you must be over 21 for the pistols, and you must have a HSC card. Once you send in your form, it will take about 3 months to get a confirmation letter from the DoJ stating the guns are registered to you. After that you are free to keep them or sell them.Last edited by Vin496; 04-09-2009, 10:49 AM.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

... What Vin496 said, and you can HAVE the guns and use them as soon as you send in the OPLAW form; you don't need to wait for the return before you can take possession.
The bit about adoption and mothers refers to intra familial transfers.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

Sorry, if I wasn't clear on the Step Father/Adoption part. As Librarian stated, I meant it in reference to the intra familial transfer.... You'll probably also ask about the "Safe Handgun Roster", that has 3 points.
1- The list does not apply to Intra Familial transfer. That's how a few, get guns not on the list, from direct family(father-child-grandparent, no brother/sister/cousin) that live in other States.
2-Guns that are in State are exempt from the list for PPT transfers.
3- The list does not apply to LEOI think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

Awesome! Thanks for the info guys. Im not sure when he aquired them, or how. I will have to see if he remembers when he got them. Another question would be that if they are registered to someone else, will i have a problem when i fill out those forms?Comment
