18-20 year olds will be able to buy a long gun if they show a current CA hunting license...you just have to take a hunters safety course a test and buy the license.

You realize that you can legally gift her any legal pistol or rifle as long as you file an oplaw report and so long it's not a RAW.
In case it wasn't obvious, nothing I write here should be interpreted as legal advice.

That's not even true I know for a fact.
California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a series of gun control bills into law, including one that raises the minimum age from 18 to 21 for buying rifles and shotguns.

The new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, exempts law enforcement, members of the military and people with hunting licenses from the restriction. State law already bans people under 21 from buying handguns.

It’s not illegal for her to possess if she picked it up. She just can’t buy one now without a hunting license.

And if you gift her a pistol she needs a FSC. She should go in today and demand her rifle. The B.S. law starts on Jan 1st, not today.

First, go to Big 5 and ask to speak to a manager if they refuse to deliver the gun to your daughter. The new law does not go into effect until midnight tonight.

If they will not budge, then you have a couple of options. First, your daughter can can find a hunter safety course to take before her 30 days are up, then buy her hunting license. Big 5 can then release the gun to her. Search the Internet, I am sure you will find online courses on the Net.

Second option, is you buy the rifle for your daughter then gift it to her using the OPLaw form. It can even be down online using the CFARS system. This is how my 18 year old son obtained his first handgun from me and his second one from his grandfather. He already had his rifle because this was back when it was legal for me to hand it to him and say it it yours with no paperwork even if he was under 18.

Personally, I would not be buying from Big 5 if I had to do option 2.

Big 5 really is Dick's light. I stopped shopping there well over 15 years ago because of lack of customer service, lack of knowledgeable staff, and an excess of FUD.

What did it for me was when an employee told me that CA made it illegal to use PowerBait to fish for trout because they included an odor attractant in the bait. Then he went on to say it was also illegal to use salmon eggs and marshmallows because that was mixing two different baits. I told him he was wrong, left my cart of stuff that I had planned to purchase at the counter and told him to keep the fishing license that he had half filled out that I had not yet paid for.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

                              Update

The Big 5 clerk called me at 0811hrs this morning and stated that he spoke with a manager about the issue and “your daughter can come today and pick up her gun.” He stated that the final pick-up date of December 30th was an internal decision within the Big 5 organization and not a California requirement. He also admitted that he only saw this December 30th pick-up end date last night.... which makes sense with what he told me on December 20th, “She can pick it up anytime on December 31st.”

Needless to say, glad someone in their organization made the right decision. And to respond to one of the comments above: my daughter didn’t drive down into the valley last night, because I told her not to. I didn’t see any reason for her to drive 2 hours in the dark (and possible foggy) to pick up a gun that she could do the next day after a good night sleep. .... yep, I was being a Dad.

O, and California still sucks. Actively trying to talk my wife into moving to the Redoubt.
