Can I still register my gun????

Without going into all the details, I moved here in 2015 and did not register my handguns. I took some horrible advice from a great friend, but I now realize it was incorrect. I just wanted to have them for home defense, but the itch is starting to get to me. I want to start shooting recreationally again.

The guns are all legal in CA. Can I register these guns without having steep penalties? Or am I screwed?

Yes you can. The law is written in a manner that essentially says "if you register it before something 'bad' happens, calling it to the attention of law enforcement, you will not be prosecuted for being late to register it".

      (a) It is the intent of the Legislature that a violation of Section 27560 or 27565 shall not constitute a “continuing offense” and the statute of limitations for commencing a prosecution for a violation of Section 27560 or 27565 commences on the date that the applicable grace period specified in Section 27560 or 27565 expires.

      (b) Sections 27560 and 27565 shall not apply to a person who reports ownership of a handgun after the applicable grace period specified in Section 27560 or 27565 expires if evidence of that violation arises only as the result of the person submitting the report described in Section 27560 or 27565.

I think the state blew its statute of limitations here, even if there was a problem, and there isn't. You can register if you want. The benefit of having it registered is that if you're caught carrying it without a ccw, it'll likely be a non prohibiting misdemeanor, not a felony.

You will receive a letter stating that your registration is approved once they process it.
It will list the details that you submitted in your registration application.

How long did yours take. I did an intra familial transfer a while back and waiting for the confirmation. CFARS shows it as pending, but it still shows my AW registration as pending and I got those confirmations back in June.

By the way, did I mention that California sucks.

I submitted that application around 6am on June 30th 2018.
                It's for a self-built semi-auto handgun.
I did not include pictures as the application did not require it.
I got the notification email December 21st that my application had been processed and the letter was postmarked on the 24th.

Four months ago I brought back two handguns (Colt 1911 & S&W 41) from out of state that were gifted to me. I received two confirmation letters from DOJ within 15 working days after I submitted the application+fee....less time than my previous experience three years ago (6 weeks).

Ridiculous we have to register things we bring in when we move here. Just a money grab by our overlords.

Kind of in the same boat. Bought an AK from a friend in 2013 who had just moved to CA from Wyoming. He never registered the rifle and neither did I (rifles didn't need to be registered at that time I believe). Am I ok keeping it not registered? Suppose I used it in a home self-defense scenario? It's my home defense weapon at this point. Would I be in legal jeopardy (assuming the rifle is in a CA legal configuration)?

                        Sorry for the thread jack....

If you and your friend both lived in Wyoming in 2013 and you bought the rifle and then eventually moved here, you are fine.
There was no requirement to register a rifle when you moved here.

If your friend moved into CA where you lived in 2013 and you bought a rifle from him, that's a problem because the transfer was illegal.

I have twice transferred a few guns to my son and in both cases it was about two weeks to get the confirmation letter.
