    Impulse Buys

A thread in "California Handguns" about an impulse buy got me thinking. We generally think of an impulse buy as a waste and a regret, but I have no doubt some of those impulsive purchases turned out to be not only a really good deal but left you totally satisfied.

I was walking into Trader Sports intent on buying a compact 1911 when I walked past the revolver counter and there was a pre-lock 686+ just gleaming at me. Right then I knew I had to have it so out came the money and the paperwork was done.

I spent the next ten days kicking myself since I really really wanted that 1911, but I resigned myself to having made a mistake. I also decided I may as well shoot it just to see what it's like before I sold it.

On pick up day the owner of the store gave me some MiWall 158 gr JHP and after two cylinder loads I knew I was never ever going to give up this gun.

Anyone else have something similar happen to them?

First time I saw my wife I knew I had to have her. Been together ever since.

When the M90NP's (Serbian AK that takes ar mags) suddenly popped up for sale at Atlantic a few weeks ago, I bought one after four second of deliberation

        I've been there.

When I first got my C&R and COE, I wanted to buy more than one handgun at a time. I went to Bullseye in San Rafael without a plan. I bought a S&W 1911 and a FN Five-Seven.

In Dec of 2016, I wanted to buy a rifle and went to the store with a friend. I didn't know what rifle to buy. I ended up choosing a Kriss Vector CQB. As I was waiting for our turn to be served, I spoke to another customer about the PTR91. I bought one too. My friend bought a Kriss on impulse.

The FN Five-Seven and PTR91 are still BNIB, never shot.

Get the spouse and kids involved in shooting sports... that way the shooting expense is amoritized amoung more participants and thus less expensive than a solo hobby. A day shooting at the range or in the desert can be less expensive than a trip to the movies. You can buy a new gun and a bunch of ammo for about the cost of taking the family to Disneyland.

That's true and they do enjoy shooting.. But an impulse buy to me is buying something (expensive) unplanned that you don't really need.. I could not possibly justify buying the firearms, attachments etc. that are legal here in Utah. I would like to... tempting.. but no.. Resistance is not futile.

All bets are off, though, if you have plenty of disposable income.

The guns I most regret not buying were ones that should have been an impulse buy. I still remember the all matching, original finish 1939 Luger with correct holster and mag at Reno in about 2005 for $900 that I thought I would walk and think on for 30 minutes...it was gone when I got back. There are all the SSE guns I didn't buy. The JM Marlins at Big 5 for $350. The Swede 96s, Chinese SKSs, Make 90s...there are more...

Now when I see something that is a deal I don't hesitate. My FFL 03 has scored me some deals. A Ruger Standard is now a family heirloom, a favorite shooter of my son, and set me back an unplanned $225. I scored a like new 1957 Marlin 336 in .35 Remington at Cabela's for $370 on the used racks. If you like it and can afford it, buy it. I learned slowly.

In California, a Glock 30 Gen4 and a Cajun CZ SP-01 are both two guns that I had to get all my gun money together for at the time but that I am glad I bought on an impulse.

Went to LGS few weeks ago to PPT a S&W 3913 from a friend. While there, saw a beautiful S&W R8 in the window and happened to be on sale so I tacked that on to the DROS.

Haven't shot it yet but love looking at my new R8. Zero regrets!!!!!!

A year ago at LGS was selling a handgun PPT and saw new Kimber K6s in the window. Couldn't resist . Do I need another snub nose .357?? No. But now I have it and like it as an addition to my collection.

Living in a free state where you can take home multiple guns in a 10 min transaction, every gun I currently buy is impulse. Kinda like walking through the grocery store and seeing a food that looks good so you toss it in your cart to test out.
