    Hmmm.

1 - live in a not awful neighborhood, mostly SFR
2 - iron gate on front door (came with apt)
3 - Bat by the door
    4 - knife under pillow
5 - mav 88 in the closet with birdshot
6 - cell phone to call police,as needed.

Fun fact, a few years ago, I DID have a mother #(*%$& try to break into my apt, or rather "let himself" in because he checked if my front door's iron gate was locked. This was back in San Diego and I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, being half awake I couldn't quite comprehend what was going on until the next day and I realized HOLY ****, this guy was going to break in and tase me! (I had hear him test the taser outside my door...)

Suffice it to say, I sleep pretty comfortably these days.

        Great Question!!!
Do you want the numbers to the safe also?
Can I post the hours nobody is home?
How about where is the best place to hide the silverware?

I probably went overboard a bit as we live in a pretty safe, rural area, but my teenaged son is often home alone while his mom travels for business and I'm at work until later into the evening. Plus it gives my wife some peace of mind when she's home and I'm at work.

                1. Infrared, HD cameras on all doors into the house and detached shop, plus a camera pointed at each side of the house that sees a wider angle. All are viewable from anywhere by each family member's cell phone and the TV in the living room.
                2. A Border Collie that hears just about everything and alerts to anyone at the front door. A no soliciting sign keeps the sales people away, so the only doorbell rings I get are from delivery drivers. Door bells at night put all of us on high alert. My friends and neighbors know to call or text before they come over after dark.
                3. Hardened front door. Added a 24" recessed strip of flat steel 2"w x 1/4" thick to the latch side of the door frame and used 4" screws in the hinges. The door is a solid piece of oak with no windows.
                4. Monitored alarm system with keyless door locks on entry doors. With a teenager, I don't have any lost keys to worry about. The front door auto-locks after 45 seconds and the condition of all entry locks and the alarm can be changed via cell phone. Panic buttons on two alarm panels at either end of the house and via cell.
                5. An 870 tucked away in the coat closet by the front door and various pistols hidden throughout the house. Yes, I trust my son completely, but he is not allowed to have any friends over unless an adult is present.
                6. Safe room in our master closet. With a 6 panel steel door hung on a reinforced frame (see #3) and keyed lock, it gives my wife and kid a place to retreat to if I'm not around.
                7. My neighbors are all native Texans who have far more guns than I do and I have plenty. We're all pretty good friends who look after each other's places when we're traveling.

Layers that include cameras, lights, alarm system, hardened doors, dogs, and a house full of trained people with various weapons. We have good relationships with neighbors who are all like minded and we all look out for each other. I sometimes think this is the best "system" there is.

One of my layers of defense is “secrecy” so you’ll never know what to expect. But trust me, if you try to come into my home, I’ll know and you’ll be sorry.

Carlsbad police, they are great. Numerous license plate readers at most large intersections. High income residents with lower than the usual "low life" factor. Crime is very low here.

Most of California was like this town 50 years ago.
