I have not seen a castle nut on a buffer.
I have seen castle nuts on buffer tubes though.
They are usually made of steel.

    The answer is potatoe.

Barrel, sight and trigger work on most pistols and shotguns.
    Most work performed while-you-wait.

I made some research and it's just an old version castle nut off the Colt xm177 model. It's just a round version without the castle style. Just an hybrid clone between the two model colt XM177 & 607

        That's not a castle nut.
        That's a spanner nut.
