Uh, dude, you butchered it... That "riddle" was never phrased to me that because it doesn't make sense....the trick question SHOULD be "what weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?" (obviously, a pound of anything weighs the same as a pound of anything else). I have NEVER heard it phrased the way you did; that is just plain dumb.Expert firearms attorney: https://www.rwslaw.com/team/adam-j-richards/

Everything I say is WRONG?!?!? HAHA. Such a hyperbole!! (look it up chief) Very characteristic of immaturity or lack of control of one's emotions.Originally posted by jemadduxThis is why I decided to just stop paying attention really to anything you have to say Ohsmily. Everything here you said wrong, can be proved wrong and so on. Your right back at your I am right and you are wrong speech. According to you here, all they need to do is join USPSA shoot one match and they become the expert. I am sure that the Army would be happy to hear that, you can email them and tell them they are wrong also http://www.arl.army.mil/main/Main/default.htm.
I figure with thirty years of shooting, Army experiance (all my expert badges) and still training a few days a week might make me know just a little on how to shoot.
I can take, um lets say a Glock 17 and load one 9mm round into it and you hit the target, now I can change the load and make it for you over shoot the target or under shoot the target. And this is what I am talking about, education will give you knowledge to know when this is happening and to know how to take care of it.
Add me to your ignore list. I might do the same because you are changing the TOPIC with regard to practice and you don't even realize it....gawd, like communicating with a child. You were addressing the concept of bullet drop/ballistics with your dropping a ball and firing a bullet question (whether you know it or not) and NOW you are talking about (with your G-17 simile) a brief introduction to bullet velocity, powder burn rates, chamber pressures, etc...There is some overlap between the two (regarding bullet velocity, but not much).
If you fail to see the difference between the two topics, then you might as well put me on your ignore list, because logic and reason stemming from an initial premise simply can't be understood by you.
Don't be bitter because you are wrong (hold it inside). Take a deep breath, and say "OHSMILY, you are RIGHT!!!"

[QUOTE=Sig226]
All joking aside--this question does help new shooters realize what bullet drop is, how much they will be affected by it, and gives them a chance to counter act it. Good post based on critical thinking, however it did use flawed science. QUOTE]
And this is what I am trying to get people to think about. To often new shooters grab a can of ammo and go shoot. Next week xy and z brand is on sale so they buy that and go shooting and can't figure out what they are doing wrong.
Something our Sgt used to yell at use all the time, "practice does NOT make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect". In other words, if you keep doing things wrong in your practice you will stay where you are at. Understand you mistakes and change them and your practice will become perfect and you will improve.Comment

Perhaps. I've believe I've heard it put both ways though...Originally posted by ohsmilyUh, dude, you butchered it... However, weight has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Velocity, air pressure, resistance, and timing do--and those are covered in my butchered version.
I appreciate the tone you took in this reply vs. others where you correct people's grammar, or their thought process. One step down from "Devine", but right about at "Rampant douchebaggery". Bravo!"The right "to carry arms in the militia for the purpose of killing game" is worthy of the mad hatter. Thus, these purposive qualifying phrases positively establish that "to bear arms" is not limited to military use." - Justice Scalia

All I can say Sig is the Ignore button is a wonderful thing
. I understood so I guess I am a idiot.
All I am really trying to get through here is that if someone understands that "BASICLY" everything has the same downward force on it. Giving that information, people will then start to understand how velocity, drag, Ballistic Coefficients and other things as weather, cross winds and so on all play part in your shooting. Ex: Very humid day, more moisture in the air creates more drag, this giving less velocity and less range (the same downward force 32.17 fps would cause the bullet to hit the ground at a shorter range).Last edited by jemaddux; 10-18-2006, 3:05 PM.Comment

Nah, I put him on the ignore list, I thought after our last words I would have already been on his "OOOppppss I was wrong"
.
I just know that a lot of people here know certain things that would really help other shooters out. Its like I said before, I never built a AK before and HAD NO IDEA where to start and all the 922 stuff and Grammaton76 came along and helped me with each step. It would be kinda cool if people would start posting pictures and so on, on how to do a lot of this stuff like for say, triggers (how to make them better), reloading (equipment, how to, things to watch for).
DOJ is going to do what DOJ is going to do. Might as well have fun with what we have and stop stressing out about it.

[QUOTE=jemaddux]I understood what you were trying to say by starting this thread and I disagree with your premise. I think new shooters don't practice wrong; rather, they don't practice at all. Shooting at coke cans at 30 yards at your local BLM range or punching paper at 25 yards with your SKS at your local indoor range isn't practice NOR does it require an understanding of the concepts you are trying to get across. That is all I am saying. I think it is more important for people to actually go out and practice rather than just shoot at rocks and cans less than 75 feet from them. Once they begin actually practicing by employing introductory marksmanship skills, THEN your point that gravity pulls things equally is applicable. Got it? I don't know why you had such a vitriolic response to me. We are more or less on the same page, but I just disagree with the steps beginning shooters must take.Originally posted by Sig226All joking aside--this question does help new shooters realize what bullet drop is, how much they will be affected by it, and gives them a chance to counter act it. (Also, even though you didn't address it, I was right that your Glock scenario using different loads has nothing to do with what you originally posted. But that is OK, I will forgive you and won't rub it in)....Expert firearms attorney: https://www.rwslaw.com/team/adam-j-richards/

Precession in a gyroscope says that if you apply a force to a spinning object the vector of the movement will be 90 degrees to the force applied.
Therefore when gravity pushed down on the bullet the bullet will try to move slightly right (with a right hand twist). That slight movement sideways will cause the bullet to travel in a spiral path through the air, slightly slowing it's rate of fall.
If you shoot the bullet out of a smoothbore then you don't have to worry about it.Frank
