    First rifle

My nephew is looking for a 223/5.56 . He mentioned a mini 14, keltec, and a ruger PC 9. Is he missing anything? He doesn’t want a AR style rifle. I told him I started with a mini 14 and did not find it accurate.

What does he want it for- hunting, plinking, home defense? I would determine that first and then purchase accordingly.

The Ruger "PC9", is... wait for it... only in 9mm. Go figure? So its going to be pretty hard to find one in .223/556 since, well they dont make any of them in that cartridge.

You did not specify semi auto or bolt action. The Mossberg MVP is a bolt action .223/556 that feeds from AR15 magazines.

The main reason I dont like mini14s is they dont use AR15 mags and since I already have a bunch of ARs and magazines Im not going to buy a .223/556 semiauto that cant use the same mags.

And everyone I personally know that had a mini14 ending up ditching it for one reason or another, mainly because of the crappy proprietary mags.

I recommend a "featureless" AR15. Simply remove the flashider, fix the stock, add a featureless grip of your choice and you are done. You have pretty much the same functionality as a standard AR15. You get to keep the standard mag release which IMO really is a deal breaker if you cant have one on an AR15. Fixed mag ARs are ghey.

Does he have to have a semi auto?

I also didn't want an AR 15, but after years and many hundreds of dollars wasted on a Mini 14 I ended up with an AR 15.

Mini 14 is the best CA 223 option. Plus they are like 10 22s, and glocks infinitely customizable

Mini-14 is a great first rifle! My first rifle was a Min-14 Ranch Model (built-in mount for optics). I loved it and wish I still had it.

It was decked out in the early 90's -- still CA legal at the time with a Butler Creek folding stock/pistol grip, factory 30 round mag, 3-9X scope.

I stupidly sold it thinking it could be replaced, then SB-23 happened and now I can't replace it in same configuration.

Still, a stock Mini-14 is a fun gun!

ARs are cool too, but you have to deal with featureless (fugly, lame ergos) or mag-lock (potentially unsafe if rifle malfunctions with a live round still in it) crap. Both have their pros and cons.

Mini-14 is un****ed out of the box!

How about a bolt gun chambered in .223?

Fightlite SCR and Keltec RDB-C are two other options besides the SU16 and mini14.

No ordinary bullpup. The RDB features downward ejection, a smooth trigger, & incredible accuracy. Completely ambidextrous in 5.56/.223 caliber.

Of the 2 semi-auto 5.56 rifles you listed my vote would be for the Mini-14.

Ditch the 5.56, go for the Ruger PC Carbine and don’t look back (and buy a matching Glock).

If he liked the MVP put a CZ 527M (carbine) in his hands.

5 lbs, fully adjustable and set trigger, butter smooth Mauser action, cold hammer forged barrel, Turkish walnut stock.

It's on another level of fit and finish compared to the MVP.

Another bump for the Mini-14. It’s the “American AK-47.”

If he likes the MVP, the Kel Tec SU-16 is way to go for semi auto, because both can use same magazines. There is also the Ruger Ranch that uses AR mags https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...16+FDE+10RD+AR

But if he's not going to get a bolt rifle that uses AR mags the Mini-14 is fine.
