Sadly, the only Winchester products I have are ammunition.

My Winchester Model 94 30-30 was given to me by my dad when he got a 30-06.. He was an avid deer hunter.. My rifle was made the year I was born.. 1951.. My second Model 94 was made in 1956. When my sister was born.

I do own a few Winchester long guns but they've been making or branding knives for about hundred years too. I open mail everyday with a Winchester pocket knife. Check out ebay there might be a knife or belt buckle that catches your interest.

So, what is a "proof mark" you ask?

As as noted in an ad from 1943:

              wp proof mark ad.jpg

Since 1866, Winchester rifles have been the standard of excellence by which all other firearms are judged.

So, my Day 2 wish is to understand the history and background of this fine company and its products.

While not exhaustive, here is a start:

It was 150 years ago that the name “Winchester” was first stamped on a rifle. But Winchester’s narrative began well before that, and it is a tale tied to the American West, to the wars of the 20th century, to big personalities such as John Browning and John Olin, and to the manufacture of billions of cartridges and millions of rifles and shotguns beloved by generations of Americans.

I only have a junk "Winchester" branded Bowie knife that I got at Fry's Electronics. My dad didn't hunt so I only got a milsurp rifle from him. Would love an 1894 Trail End takedown in.450 Marlin, though.

I love this topic, more please!

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Good pics boopiejones. Thanks!

I was going to write about the ancillary products in a couple of days but perhaps I'll bump lever-guns musings and handle this first.
