A Pennsylvania man reportedly killed a 679-pound black bear that was five yards away with a .357 handgun during last weekend's opening of the state's four-day bear harvest.

Jordan M. Tutmaher, the man, said the bear emerged near a Christmas tree patch, according to the report. YourErie.com reported.

679 lb. is absolute BS. That bear may be 275-325 max. Anyone who believes it is 679 has never harvested a black bear or seen one close. black bear fed by do gooders thinking that is OK. . Probably wanted some cookies so fed with one hand and shot with the other.

Eastern Black Bear are normally larger than the examples we see on the west coast. I think the record is in the 900 pound range.

OK My black bear was near Mt. Shasta and weighed 350. I used a sw model 29 in 44 mag. 240 gr jsp's.

this article offers some advice, although the authors unfortunately did not offer any advice on calibers or loads.

While its safe to say a 44 mag with decent shot placement will kill black bears. It would be good to know if smaller calibers with modern ammo could be a decent substitute !

personally lugging a 44 mag along on a trail hike would get old really quick!
