    surplus Czech 7.62 x 54R - getting the @#$@ can open

I just got a 800 round can of Czech 7.62 x 54R ammo from AIM, and I'm at a loss for how to open it. I figure a cold chisel will definitely do the job, but I imagine that there's a 'finesse way' to open these things. I tried pulling on the tabs on the can, and they simply broke off.

    Any suggestions?

You're supposed to use the tabs to tug/pull the can top open... tug/peel them off with force... There are three of them, and you need to use a bar or large screwdriver through the loop to get leverage...

If you broke them... umm... don't know how to help you. Get creative.

Many thanks for the info - I'll keep this in mind should I get another case of the stuff.

        Time to get creative.

i got some albanian and it came with a rusted "can opener." more like a jagged steel claw attached to a handle. once you got the first cut the thing worked like a charm.

Bring it by my shop and I'll use the plasma cutter to open it up

Got a pair of vice grips? Maybe pinch the remaining stub that didn't break off and try rolling it like a sardine can.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Don't people have can openers anymore? How are you going to open those cans of Spaghetti-O's in a SHTF situation? Let this stuck can of ammo be a lesson to us all, go out and stock up on good old fashioned can openers, the ones with a blade.

put a large screwdriver or whatever thru the pull loop and get the seam opened an inch or so using brute force. then use your head and use leverage somehow. I seem to recall grabbing it with some dikes or a vice grip and then twing that to get mechanical advantage like a can opener. you can even put the screwdriver through the cutter or vice gip handles to get it to start curling up and pulling the soldered tab out of the covering metal.

If you draw blood the best way to open the can is to chuck it at a concrete wall and stomp on it.

The essence of Western civilization is the Magna Carta, not the Magna Mac. The fact that non-Westerners may bite into the later has no implications for their accepting the former.

EDIT 2020: To be fair that seems to apply to many Westerners also.
