    Intra Family Firearm Transfer Question

My grandfather wants to give me 4 rifles and 6 handguns. They were bought and currently reside in California. His CA drivers license recently expired and he lives in AZ now. He does still own a house in CA.

My questions is can i do the intra-family form on CFARS or do i have to go to a FFL.

CFARS is far cheaper than going to a FFL, but i dont want to do anything illegal.

Who has possession of them now, and how did that person come into possession of them?

I think the big question here is how long has Gramps been in AZ and does he have a AZ license yet?

If he now lives in AZ then it must be done through an FFL.

The intra-familial firearm transfer form requires the owner's CA DL (or Military ID but I'm pretty sure this isn't relevant).

You need to go through an FFL.

Have to go thru ffl here if he is not a resident. Or he must come here to transfer in person if he is resident here..

Are said firearms on the books? Were they purchased 40+ years ago ? Question is are they in Arizona or here?
Question do you own a locking safe to put said firearms in ?
All these questions are rhetorical don't answer .

Yeah if he is a legal resident of AZ, has to go through an FFL.

He has a AZ DL now. He does have a Military ID. The guns were bought in CA and they are in my possession in a safe at the moment.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to transfer them through an FFL, especially if you have them locked up.

Doesn't matter if the guns were purchased in CA or currently reside in CA. If your grandfather is the registered owner of them and he's a current resident of AZ with a AZDL, and you want to have them legally transferred to you, then the intra family transfer has to go through a CA FFL.

I just did this a couple of months ago with my dad, who has a AZDL lives in AZ, and who had bought his handgun in CA when he worked for SCSD back in the day.

The Military ID can be used for soldiers residing in a state they are not a resident of to transfer a firearm laterally. Or is currently residing in a state they are not a residence of and wishes to purchase a firearm in that state (with orders stating soldier's assigned station).

Save yourself the trouble and go through an FFL. It's only $35 (not including shipping) compared to $19.
