Makes no sense. If there was reason to carry the gun, that reason did not disappear when the guy confronted you. Was the danger wildlife or human.

If the expected danger was human, what if the guy confronting you was the danger and just wanted you disarmed before he pulled his gun and robbed you?

If the danger was wildlife, did you leave the area once disarmed? Or were you not really concerned about the danger in the first place? Was the other guy going to protect you if you were attacked by a wild animal?

If I were truly concerned about wildlife attacks, I wouldn't put myself and my family or friends in danger because of some stranger's opinion. If you didn't leave after disarming, you proved the stranger's point. You weren't truly concerned.

In Nevada, anyone who carries openly can carry with a round in the chamber and full magazine or cylinder. This is the recommended method of carry. If you do not feel comfortable carrying with a round in the chamber, then it is likely you are not comfortable or knowledgeable enough about firearms to safely carry regularly for self-defense. Not sure I'd play into the stereotype of "gun nut looking for an excuse to use his gun" by making a veiled threat of physical violence against a guy who was only talking and never got more than 7 feet from OP (per OP).

Maybe you meant you'd punch him the face or something but I think most people would [reasonably] equate "not end well for you" coming from an OC guy with "I am gonna unsling this bad-boy and put it to use against you".

Better to say something like "If you don't let me go about my day I will report you to a Ranger".

Park Rangers are there for this type of thing.

I don't think you purposely went looking for attention, but you should have expected it. As other's have said just because we can do something doesn't always mean we should or it's a smart thing to do.

I do kind of have to think that your choice to carry an AK brought this upon yourself. If you had OC'd a handgun my bet is no one would have batted an eye. Hell I've seen people OC in downtown Reno, so out in the middle of nowhere it would be pretty much ignored I bet. I kind of think a good analogy would be what my father always preached to me "proper tool for the proper job". I think you picked the wrong tool to exercise your right.

You should also have been somewhat prepared for the reaction here. How many video's have we seen over the years of street corner lawyer's OCing a long gun that are just out looking for some type of confrontation? I suppose it's only natural for people to reach the same conclusion from your story.

Does OP think the reaction would have been the same if the AK had been replaced with a lever-action or 10/22?

Great post, you did a much better job of saying what I was thinking and trying to say earlier.

While OP didn't do anything "wrong" - he was within his legal rights and not confrontational, and I think we all support the right to open carry - he also shouldn't be shocked by what happened, on account of the combination of his particular location and his choice of weapon.

If your goal is NOT to attract attention while carrying a rifle (which OP stated that it was, indeed, never his intention to seek attention), you should try to be this guy:

                    Not these guys:

If you're carrying like ^ those guys, you shouldn't be surprised when people come talk to you about it, regardless of what state you're in. The first guy is clearly just there to enjoy the outdoors, and clearly has a rifle and pistol for the purposes of said outdoor activity. I doubt even a bay area transplant would bat an eye at him. The second 2 guys, while they might not actually be there with EBRs to try to get attention and offend people, it certainly appears like that's what they're trying to do, and they shouldn't be surprised when that's exactly what happens. I realize OP was "outdoors", not in a Chipotle, but he was still in a tourist area. If he really felt like he needed to have an AK for his stroll through the ghost town, he could have carried it in a soft case and probably would have avoided the unwanted attention:

Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

Are you certain? I'd be surprised if this was actually the law in NV, it's perfectly legal for me to open carry loaded in OR and all the other free states I know of.

Surprises me how many pro gun control people are on here. Kind of makes me wonder how many make their wife wear a burka in public.

You should have carried concealed like a civilized adult. If not possible, you should have OC'd a pistol, a discreetly as reasonably possible.

You should not have walked around with an AK on your back if there was no expectation you would be shooting it very soon. You should understand that was attention-seeking behavior.

If it was legal to walk around in the NF naked, would you? Wear a white hood? Insult people?

Just because you can, does not mean you should. The guy who confronted you, do you think he is more likely, or less likely, to support more gun restrictions as a result if your stunt?

You should have thought about that first.

Yeah just reread #2 and #5, which seems confusing, does that mean the other items don't mean anything? Weird, not familiar with NV St Constitution though.

Some of you guys have been brainwashed into thinking rights end when they upset people.

The gays and the trannies didn't gain expanded rights by staying in the closet. When you act like there is something wrong with your legal activities you send the message that you are ashamed.
