How should this man have handled the

    charging grizzly bear any differently?

He had a handgun, caliber unknown, and only fired one shot. I would have continued to fire
until the bear stayed down or I ran out of ammo. You don't aim to "clip her leg". You aim to kill or incapacitate.
I would fire center of mass on the animal.

What is proper guns and ammo for a charging griz?

    Pump shotgun w/ deer slugs?
    .357 Mag.?
    .44 Mag?
    .25-06 or heavier caliber rifle?

The report said he used a 3 round shotgun holding bird-shot. IMHO, bad idea, compounded by only shooting to wound. The guy is luck he wasn't hurt or killed, and now there's a wounded bear on his land. Not a good situation. You ether leave the bear alone or treat it as a deadly threat.

For ammo, 00 buck or preferably slugs if the shotgun is the only firearm available. A rifle would be better. A 45-70 lever gun, a semi auto chambered in 458 socom, or something similar, or, ideally a rifle chambered in at least .338 wm. And keep your distance. Why go down to ground level when you can shoot from the porch?

I would have called the Conservation Officers way before hand and let them deal with mamma bear and her cubs.

I would not have gone out into the yard to begin with UNLESS there was a person out there I was trying to protect. I gather this man had a wife and children. He also had at least one dog. The video clip was not well in focus. It appears that he had a pistol unless it was a sawed-off shotgun but maybe those are OK in Canada.

The flash from the perceived pistol earlier by me seemed rather bright so I figured it had to be at least as potent as a .357 but it turns out to be some sort of shotgun.

The dog did not prove brave in this situation.

The pump shotgun I keep for home defense certainly does not have a plug in the mag tube.

There are grizzly bears in Idaho as well as cougars, wolves and dangerous two-legged critters (Bigfoot maybe?) as well.

My apartment has been burglarized twice since I moved in here two+ years ago and I filed a restraining order against a crazy man
I had as a roomie last year.

Charging grizz? Keep shooting until it dies, you die or you run out of ammo.

He should have used an 1858 Remington replica black powder revolver made by Uberti in Italy that he keeps under his pillow in Motel 6 rooms!

                      This^^^

Plus, nobody short of a numb nut jackass would walk towards a mama bear with cubs much less trying to shoot at them.

Plus, shooting to wound an animal is immoral, illegal, and stupid.

                        1. Don't backpeddle. No faster way to wind up on the ground for a ground and pound from an angry bear that wants to eat you than that.
                        2. Aim for the head. Whatever the gun, you're probably going to get one shot unless it is a semi auto. I have personally broken both shoulders and turned the heart and lungs to goo with a 175gr Swift A-Frame from a 7mm Weatherby at about 25 yards on a big bear...bear then proceeded to be VERY angry for a good 10-15 seconds.
                        3. Don't wait to open fire inside about 35 yards. Hoping for a false charge isn't a great strategy but it is a great way to make sure you don't get two shots in.
                        4. Don't go around a bear with cubs.

^^^Have killed big bears at about same distance in the video.

In my opinion there is no such thing as a false charge, I defy anyone to prove to me that they can tell and or prove 100% of the time that a animal is bluffing. If they are charging they mean it and you better deal with it and damn fast to. There might not be any Griz in Boise yet but they are all along the ID-MT border areas and well inside of ID in some areas. Maybe they will find a few lefties to eat over on our side of the border.
