Shot a few guns for the first time last night

I've had a few handguns that I haven't shot yet and last night was my opportunity. I shot a Glock 43, Cobra Derringer in 38 Special, and a Beretta 21A in .22LR.

The Glock 43 was everything I thought it would be. A pleasure to shoot. Very accurate.

The Beretta 21A was fun to shoot. Sights aren't great. Good little shooter, Accurate. One mag had issues, I'll replace the springs and see if it helps, Otherwise a nice fun little gun, I purchased a .25ACP barrel and complete slide for $100, I'll try next time. I know the ballistics are similar.

The Cobra Derringer in .38 Special was NOT fun to shoot. I could only pull off 12 reduced load range rounds. They key-holed and I had NO accuracy. I may look for a .380 ACP barrel and see if it is any more enjoyable. It is heavy and not all that small for only 2 shots. One round had a light primer strike when I extracted it. I'll chalk that up to range reloads. I couldn't imagine shooting a +p out of it, probably why it's not recommended. Now just a novelty purchase, prop.

I also brought along to compare, a Glock 26 & 42, a Ruger MkIII Hunter, Ruger LCP & LC380, Seecamp 32 and a Kimber Pro Carry II.

Of the .380's I prefer and carry the LCP, Love the Glock 42 and find the LC380 a good solid handgun but when compared to the Glock and LCP falls short. I have the 9mm upper and when compared to the Glock 43 the Glock is slightly slimmer and lighter. I do like the safety on the Ruger LC380/LC9. The trigger is just fine, I have no issues but the Glock trigger has less pull and a cleaner break, IMHO.

The Seecamp32 is a great accurate manageable little gun. Feeds Hornady and Winchester Silver Tips I had no problem feeding PMC Bronze 60 grain. I'm very happy with it. I carry it from time to time and needed to shoot it to determine reliability, 100%.

The Beretta 21A was both fun and accurate as compared with my Ruger MkIII Hunter that puts 10/10 in the bulls eye at 12 yards or 36', palm size groups @ 100 yards without a rest. I love the gun and have taken many coyote at 100 yards and less with it too. Would love to get the MKIV Hunter in the 4" barrel but it's not on the roster.

The Kimber Pro Carry II has been my bedside gun and I haven't cleaned it or shot it in some time. Had 2 FTRTB and one stove pipe. That Kimber mag will get new springs, and a cleaning and lube because it wasn't as smooth as I prefer. I didn't clean it the last time I shot it and maybe only ran a bore snake through it the time before that. Temporarily rotated out until it's running 100% in favor of the Glock 19 and the 15 rounds it holds eliminating the need for a second mag.

Interesting mix of guns you have there, The seacamp seemed like a cool little gun. My buddy has been wanting to buy one, I was interested in what it was all about.

You should listen to Pyrofox, He's is right on the money. I wouldn't keep a gun in my nightstand that has had ftf and stovepipe issues in the past. especially if you have other options.

Derringers always looked miserable to shoot, I'm not surprised by your report.

I too am not surprised you didn't like shooting the derringer. But in all fairness that's not what they are intended to do. They are just a pocket gun that you use to either get out of a bad situation or shove in someone's gut and squeeze off a couple rounds.

Thank you DolphinFan, I enjoyed this multiple firearm range review thread and also think it's the kind of thread that's more needed here on Calguns.

(I wish posting photos was easier...so I'm not going to deduct points for no pictures.)

It's from threads like these that hopefully people learn things like that those inexpensive Davis or later re-named Cobra derringers are just a novelty. They're not accurate and it usually has something to do with most modern derringers having an extremely heavy trigger due to the fact that they don't have a trigger guard, but the company had worried lawyers.

The Davis 32 ACP that I have fired was mostly zinc pot metal and was working its way to having a loose barrel lock up with only a box of ammo through it. The other thing that irked me about that Derringer was how poorly it was thought out and it's safety design.
It's got the push type crossbolt / hammer block safety (that you see on a lot of designs that weren't originally equipped with safeties because it's cheap for the gun makers to install.) But it was going the wrong way, when they could have easily made it the correct way.

I have 4 Kimbers. Love them all. The Pro Carry II was sent back to Kimber after the first 500 rounds proved to show issues with springs, and the feed ramp and an extractor. Ever since getting it back it's been very accurate and reliable.
My fault it was dirty and not cleaned after the last 2 range sessions other than a bore snake. I'm field stripping, cleaning and oiling right now.
