At the Valejo gun show today, spyed a mint in card board box with all paperwork - Nickel Sig P220 plain jane, looked like it had been fired but not allot.

I was on the verge of buying it for $800

I mean i was that close to handing over the cash for such a beautiful gun when the FFL dealer decided to see how clean it was buy stripping it down,

When he pulled the slide away from the frame, (Gasp) i was shocked to see that the former owner had inscribed, with some metal edged sharp tool, the letters C D L # on one side of the back top of the frame towards the trigger and on the other side his actual drivers lic. number.

Am i shallow passing up such a clean gun due to someone elses D.L. # inscribed on it even when its hidden from sight or do you agree like how i felt that it was now tainted and not worth the cash.

I believe the FFL guy did not know that it was there as he explained before hand that he had just taken it in.

For a Sig collector which im not really but i do own and like them i thought this was an awsome find, until it was taken apart.

Your thoughts please, would you buy a consignment gun if it had these markings.

My '82 Blackhawk had some guy's DL# scratched into the butt. I bought it and refinished it, figured it was why the gun was so cheap.

If the price was good, I would have still bought it and "massaged" those marks out of the surface with a Dremel fine-grit wheel and then polish wheel to a point they were minimal or gone.

In any case, as much as I am a SIG fan, and they are one of my favorite semi-autos, it's still just a SIG - they made a whole lot of them.

And no, I agree - I would not be defacing a gun in that manner. People are weird and it sounds like a first-time gun owner may have done that.

The owner probably never intended to sell it. He may be dead now. He put the ID mark on it because it belonged to him and that is his right as a property owner.

I would, and I have. I recently bought a (fairly) rare S&W 547 - and found it had the CDL inscribed TWICE while I was handling it. The price was ~25-30% less than it could have fetched otherwise, so I bought it and never looked back.

But yeah....it f-ing hurts to see that. Especially when the gun is CHERRY in every other respect.

Yep it was just liked that, i wonder now if he lower's the price i felt $800 was fare for this gun, until i saw the D.L. mark. Not sure of the age, but at came in a foam impressioned card board box with a picture of the sig on the cover.

I eased my pain by sercureing funds on a Springfield 1911 tactical operator with a full length rail and bull barrel that takes the sting away somewhat.

Damn i did not check that for a name tag.

I've seen quite a few guns with folk's DL's on them. Unless its really obvious and poorly done, I'd still buy it. I prefer shooters rather than safe queens.

The police used tell people to do this to all the important stuff. They did not use to do gun sale checks and some times this was the only way to get a
stolen gun back. Old habits die hard.

My Deerfield carbine has a DL on the receiver, I got it for 1/2 the cost of a regular one. If its a shooter then buy it. If you are buying a collector piece, no way.
