Any members of Oak Tree Gun Range? UPDATE Post #40

How do you like it? Are the pistol ranges crowded on the weekend? How is the staff?

Also, I heard they have a membership sale during Black Friday in the past. Any truth in this?

I have a family membership at Firing Line and shoot there with the wife about once a week. Its close by so really convenient. Nice group of guys that work there. However, distance is limited and I can't shoot my AR.

What have you heard? I only know a couple of folks that frequent Oak Tree and they seem to like it.

Wow. I know this stuff happens. Just never knew its so often and so close to home. I don't read the news much so I never knew about these incidents. But it validates my uneasiness when the range is crowded. We don't shoot or leave when its crowded. Just too risky for me.

I have been a member for the past 5 years. I avoid weekends, crazy crowded. I think it is a great first rate range. Quality ranges for handguns, both paper and steel. A great shotgun set up both skeet and trap. A 100 yard rifle range, ok, nothing great. Very polite staff both in the sales area and on the ranges.

A very nice quality club house restaurant that serves first rate burgers. Nice to enjoy a burger and beer after the guns are put away.

All in all I am very pleased. I can usually be found on the pistol ranges most Thursday afternoons trying to out shoot my two friends to see who buys the burgers and beer.

I am aware of several suicides/attempts in the past several years. I guess that goes with the territory. Close in to a major metropolitan area. Certainly nothing to do with corporate policies or staff.

In the past they have had a 1/2 price or two for one membership on Black Friday. I have always renewed then.

The range staff has always been polite and helpful.

I am not a member, but Oaktree is where I shoot.

It is "the cleanest dirty shirt in the pile," and I would say that it is several magnitudes better than the alternatives, if the alternatives are an outdoor range like Angeles Shooting Range in Sylmar, or an indoor range like The Target Range in Van Nuys. Oaktree is a beautiful facility, and the staff are not too moronic. The weekday crowds are usually manageable. (I do not bother to go on weekends because I assume that every range will be a mess on weekends.) So, the short answer to your question is that it is the best range that I have found in my part of SoCal.

A Place to Shoot is not too far away from Oak Tree. Its a hidden gem in my opinion. Not too crowded on the weekend mornings.

If you want to shoot guns APTS is much better, i only go to oak tree to shoot my bow on occasion.. oaktree is expensive, small, crowded, lots of first time shooters.. think of it like a tourists gun range..

Interesting. I've never heard of APTS. I just checked their website. Looks like a good selection of ranges and the membership for the wife and I is reasonable. We can actually pay for it and our membership for Firing Line for the same price as Oak Tree.

The website says they have a member only range. Is it a paper or steel target range? Does it have the usual range restrictions or are you allowed to draw from a holster and stuff?

Quite a few people talk smack about Oak Tree and there are quite a few valid reasons why. However they have done some improvements and it seems the word is out about their reputation going through hard times. I am a member and shoot skeet 2-3 days a week. If you really want to join, wait until November when they usually advertise a special which is half off the regular membership price. If you shoot a lot of pistol an rifle, it's well worth the discounted price. If you only shoot shotgun, you would need to be shooting a lot to get your money's worth IMO. I will typicaly shoot 300 shot shells a week so to me it's worth the price. They also have a Friday night special for trap and skeet. At the moment it's $5.00 per round.

I don't live in the area but have shot at both and way more prefer A Place To Shoot. The only time I would go to Oak Tree is if A Place To Shoot would be closed.

I never understood choosing Oak Tree over APTS if both are an option. Especially after the Armatix smart gun debacle.
