Is there such a thing as low power / subsonic .308?

If a person had a .308 rifle and wanted to use it for home defense, is there any kind of low power, subsonic, frangible or reloaded ammunition that would make the .308 a reasonable choice without endangering the neighborhood in the way that normal .308 would due to extreme over penetration?

No, are you trying to use a bolt gun for home defense? If so, stop.

If not you won't find or build a subsonic load in .308 that will reliably cycle a semi auto.

In addition, a subsonic .308 would be nearly equivalent to a 9mm pistol or .45 ACP depending on weight. And slow heavy projectiles over penetrate worse than light fast ones.

If you want the firepower of a rifle, and the safest ammo, buy a 5.56mm semi auto, fill it with soft point ammo.

I saw subsonic 7.62x39 ammo at Sportsmans Warehouse, I’m sure there are loads tailored for suppressors - I’d buy subsonic Mosin ammo it it was tactical enough...

atomic makes subsonic 308. You have to fine tune an ar10 to make it cycle. Even my friends pws with adjustable gas block has issues cycling it.

You could Load the round yourself. You could use round nose heavy bullets, Sierra makes a 220 grain. I don't reload or I'd give more detailed advise but that's where I'd start.
