Mine runs flawlessly with Magpul mags but doesn't like metal commie mags. The Magpuls fit tighter, commie mags are loose and lend to feeding issues. Much easier to mount a red dot on the rail too.

If i order a lower only of any rifle will the local ffl in ca hand it over to me?. I want a featureless rifle but it seems like no one is willing to do the grip mod and sell me the rifle. I can order it and put it together myself.

For most of these guns the lower is the serialized part. So yes the FFL will hand it to you...only after completing the DROS and waiting 10 days.

A few years back I was in a similar situation, I was looking for a western gun that shot the 7.62x39. The choices broke down into 2 broad categories. It could be a complete gun that was able to take AK mags, such as a PTR32 or Sig556R or Mutant etc. This would be pricey, with the cheapest option being the PTR at about $1200, and even then it doesn't accept all AK mags.

The other option would be to get an AR upper that was chambered in x39. Besides buying the complete upper, I'd have to buy AR mags fitted for the x39 since AK mags wouldn't work. This was by far the cheaper option; lowers (including the x39 bcg) were $300-$400 back then & are a bit cheaper now. A regular AR lower would work so I didn't need to buy that. So for less than $500 plus switching out a lower from a 5.56 gun, I had a western gun that shot x39. The price difference was so great that I could buy a stash of x39 AR mags, + a few cases of ammo, and still come out less $$ than buying a complete x39 gun.

Also, I didn't have a big stash of AK mags to begin with, so it's not like I was wedded to the idea that it must accept AK mags.

edit: The Galil Ace wasn't available when I made my choice. I'd still choose the same thing, but the Galil would get some serious consideration.

It's just a rifle thats a bit different. I see it's not cheap although i seen a lot on gunbroker for about 1300 complete. Thats npt to say the seller would do me a solid and make it featureless.
