That's where I knew this was going to get good.

        Square backs?

After a google search I think I know what you're talking about but it seems you have it backward with the Pre- and Post- style of mags. It doesn't look like there is a lot of info about this online.

Utter nonsense doesn't generate a lot of information.

              Sounds legit

, but I think it's the hatch backs that are illegal.

The Full MetalLined mags with the Square notch in the rear came out n the early 90's. 'A guy at the range" is wrong.

Currently, there have been 10 generations of Glock magazines.
Because some of those generations only have minor differences, almost all vendors and the majority of the public have grouped them into 5 Gens for simplicity.

NFML = Non Full Metal Lined. Has "u" notch.
FML = Full Metal Lined. Has "square" notch.

generations 1-3 are known as Gen 1 (NFML with right side mag catch)
generations 4-7 are known as Gen 2 (FML with right side mag catch)
generation 8 is known as Gen 3 (FML with right & front side mag catch)
generation 9 is known as Gen 4 (FML with right, front, & left side mag catch)
generation 10 is known as Gen 5 (FML with right and left side mag catch)

Because the majority of people utilize the simplified Gen system, they consider Gen 1 magazines to be pre-94 ban and Gen 2-5 to be post-94 ban.

However, if you look at the actual magazine generations...
                  1. generation 1 was made from 1982 - 1983.
                  2. generation 2 was made from 1984 - 1988.
                  3. generation 3 was made from 1988 - 1993.
                  4. generation 4 was made from 1993 - (September) 1994.
                  4. generations 5-6 were made during the Federal ban (September 1994 - September 2004).
                  5. generation 7 was made from (October) 2004 - 2008.
                  6. generation 8 was made from 2008 - 2010.
                  7. generation 9 was made from 2010 - 2017.
                  8. generation 10 started in 2017 and are the current production.

One can keep ones legally owned magazines in service using whatever service parts are available at the time. This means that many early magazines may have had the body component replaced at one time or another.

Kinda like Honest Abes genuine axe, whos handle has been replaced 9 times, whos head was replaced 3 times.

I agree with all the comments that "the guy" was wrong. In 1994 before the crime bill was passed, I bought a new Gen 2 Glock 19, it came with two standard capacity square notch magazines. The same magazines ended up selling for $50 each and up after the federal ban.
