    CA Drivers License Problem

Two weeks ago I thought I had lost my wallet. As a result, I replaced my credit cards and went to the DMV to replace my DL. Three days later I found my wallet in my wife's car. No problem, my new credit cards had already arrived. Several days ago I received my "replacement" DL. It's a replacement license, not a renewal. I paid the cost to replace it, not to renew it (pricing is different and no tests were taken). The DMV made no mention of a REAL-ID. I assumed (later) that this was because my DL wasn't set to expire until 2019. The replacement CA DL has the same expiration date as the DL that I thought I had lost. The only change is the Federal Limits Apply designation on the upper right hand corner of the replacement license.

Now I find out that the "replacement" DL does not allow me to purchase a firearm because of the Federal Limits Apply designation.

I don't get it. I didn't renew my license (it's a replacement). I wasn't asked if I wanted to get a REAL-ID. My original license (which I still have in my possession) does not expire for another year.

I know that the answer to this problem is to go back to the DMV and get a REAL-ID DL. Technically, the DMV didn't renew my license, they issued me a replacement DL; one with the same expiration date but with the Federal Limits Apply designation.

Until I can get to the DMV to get a REAL-ID, I understand that I cannot purchase a firearm, but does this also mean that I cannot transfer a firearm (one that was already in the works before this fiasco occurred). I'm sure I'd be in a world of hurt if I just used my original DL.

Use the original. Keep the other for any illegal alien benefits offered. Dupes are needed in this unstable world.

      Been there. That sucks.
Same thing happened except I TOLD THEM I wanted the Fed ID, showed all the proper documentation, payed the fee, and STILL got the CA version.
I drove to Paso Robles to do it the second time, got an appointment the next day.

Another trip to DMV is in order OP.

Unless you got a new drivers license number which I doubt I don’t see why you couldn’t use your old ID.

Your mistake was in assuming the DMV would be helpful.

          How so?

What if you lost the replacement one, but then found the old one?

Not at all. Your DL number has been the same since you got your first license...store the replacement and use your original.

              Nope.
Your old one is fine unless they issued you a new NUMBER on your new one.

                Just a thought, here...

The OP goes to the FFL to buy, or PPT
Shows his 'lost and found' license
FFL runs the license for DROS...

Since he got a 'replacement' with Fed Limits Apply would that show up from the database, or would his unrestricted license record show up?

...Denied due to replacement license record showing Fed Limits Apply, or
...Everything is cool using the old license.

I am not sure which scenario would unfold, but it may be worth checking out.

My son in law is LEO and gun store even refused him because he did not have real id. Went to another store and was fine.

I think some gun stores have jumped the gun as law has not taken effect yet. I think Oct. 1 2020 is the deadline so not sure why gun stores freaking out already.

Since we all will need a Real ID when flying domestically very very soon, it makes sense to get at least a US passport card. I'll do the Real ID version of my California Driver License next time it's up for renewal.

Real ID is not required for firearm purchases. And your print-out copy of your ID doesn’t make you unlost copy any less valid.

                              I agree. Use old ID.
