    California calls them "large-capacity magazines".

You want to look at California PC 32310 - 32390.
    https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...ctionNum=32310.

    32310.

    (a) Except as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 32400) of this chapter and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, buys, or receives any large-capacity magazine is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170.
Note that 32310(c) and 32310(d) have been thrown out by Duncan V Becerra. It still exists in the PC, but is unenforceable due to court order.

California says that buying and importing is illegal.

Since the state has no legal jurisdiction outside of the state boarders, they can not prevent you from buying it outside the state boarders. Importing it back into the state is a violation of 32310(a) and is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170.

Perfectly legal if not brought back to CA. I have out of state storage I have left such magazines at while traveling out of state. If seller suspects you are from CA they may not feel comfortable selling them to you.

Maybe they just wanted to raise the price for you. That's what I would have done.

Just don't be dumb pay cash don't say dumb stuff and stay legal. Once long ago in AZ I forgot and paid with credit card at a gun shop for a 10 round Ruger P series magazine and get this, a 12rd Mac 11 magazine. Oh the horror!

The clerk asked to see ID and had a hissy fit about the 10rd magazine and totally glossed over the 12 round magazine! The 10rd was obviously a 10rd with a big plastic block on bottom. He begrudgingly completed the transaction. And yes the 12rd mag stayed out of CA.

Every time I drive to Utah to visit my kids I buy a bunch of 30rd magpuls at Scheels and leave them with my kids. When i retire there ill have access to a lot of CA contraband.

You can do what you want in a free state. That's what freedom is all about. Ca residents feel guilty for doing what free people do every day in other states because of brainwashing.

You have to rely on your own conscience to do what is right for the laws the state has placed upon you. I would use common sense for this situation. I live with a free mind, you should also.

Why wouldn't they feel comfortable? It's a perfectly legal transaction in any other state, regardless of where the buyer lives. There's no law that says you have to prove what state you live in and be constrained by that state's laws when visiting other states. That's just fear mongering.

Whatever the buyer does with the merchandise after they purchase it is entirely their responsibility, and nobody else's damn business.

This is the same as asking, “If I buy weed in a decriminalized state, can I bring it to a state that still criminalizes it?” Or better yet, “Can I pick up a hooker at a legal brothel in Nevada and bring her the California to do the deed?” Sad thing is neither of these pertain to our second amendment rights, but only serve to answer the question with another question.

What you do outside of California is not bound by California law.
Can't bring them home, but you can buy and use them out of state, and store them out of state.
