2 piece full length guide rod question.

So recently I acquired a 1911 with a 2 piece guide rod, out of curiosity has anyone attempted to fire it without the hex rod so that it’s just the spring retaining cap, the spring, and the spring rod piece that sits under the barrel? Would it not be the same as shooting it like a standard gi style guide rod system? The only difference is the spring retainer cap is not closed off and the hex rod part of the two piece is absent? I didn’t see any information online regarding this but hypothetically it would be conceptually the same?

The difference is that the GI guide rod is rounded at the end to smoothly go through the spring as the spring is compressed. The stubby from a two piece guide rod has a flat end. It might work or bind up. It will wear out/damage the spring even if it does work.
