The model number should be under the yoke. Open the cylinder it should be on the frame there. It looks like it was refinished, and may be a model 10, but the front sight doesn't look right.

I am sure it is an older model based upon the fact that it has 5 screws holding down the side plate and it has the older style hammer. My knowledge is limited on the older ones but based upon what I do know - I am not at all surprised that you can't find a model number. It looks to be what they call a pre model 10. The pre model was used to signify what was later given a model numbier - for example the N frame the preceded the Model 27 was called a pre-27.

M&P 32? Can't tell if it's a 4 or 5 screw (the fifth screw would be at the front of the trigger guard). I doubt those are original grips but you never know what custom work was done by the factory.

I agree with blasterp7, it looks like a Pre Model 10

Also some had names given by Smith and Wesson like registered magnum, military and police, and the Outdoorsman. This was often (not always) printed on the box that came with the weapon - but nowhere to be found on the weapon itself. So this could have been and M and P.

Some one with more knowledge will chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

The frame is too small to be a M&P 32.

The stocks are not original and are not period correct - they are Herretts

What does it say on the right side of the barrel, and are there any numbers on the bottom of the barrel above the ejector rod?

Nothing on the bottom of the barrel and the right side says 38S&WSPL

That is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 - 4th change that has been refinished. Made in the early forties or earlier it features the long action and lacks the hammer block safety of the S series M&Ps.
